Micromax grabs top spot for phone sales in India

Today isn't just the day in which we found out that Xiaomi climbed to the top spot in smartphone sales in its home country of China. India's Micromax can boast a No.1 position of its own.

The company now has the biggest market share for phone sales in India, topping Samsung, which has become second. In China it was also Samsung being knocked down a notch by Xiaomi, but over there we were talking about smartphone sales.

In India Micromax is the leader in all phone sales combined. Interestingly, it hasn't managed to grab the top spot for smartphones just yet, where it's currently second behind Samsung.

Micromax had a 16.6% market share in phones in India during the second quarter of this year, according to market research firm CounterPoint. The company's share in the first quarter was 13%.

It's followed by Samsung which holds 14.4% of the Indian phone market, and Nokia with 10.9%.

As previously mentioned, the situation is different when we count smartphones only. Here Samsung is king with 25.3% of the market, and Micromax has to make do with just 19.1%. The third place is occupied by another Indian company, Karbonn, with 5.9% market share.

In Q2 2014, Indian brands together accounted for more than two thirds of all mobile phones sold in India, and more than half of the smartphone shipments. While this performance is notable, in the future they will have to battle increasingly aggressive competitors from overseas, such as Xiaomi, Gionee, Huawei, and Asus - all focused on selling decently specced handsets at incredibly low prices. Xiaomi has in fact recently entered India, and it seems to have been successful so far. On the other hand, Micromax may go beyond its domestic market too, in which case it could grow even more than it has so far.
