Moto G5 and G5 Plus get a metal build, Snapdragons 430&625 inside

George, 26 February 2017

Lenovo/Motorola has announced yet another generation of the hugely successful Moto G - we are now at 5 - and that means the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are official. Sharing an overall similar design and metal build, the two smartphones are meant to bring a touch of premium to a model range governed by budget considerations.

Motorola Moto G5

The plain Moto G5 is built around a 5-inch FullHD IPS display, covered with Gorilla Glass 3. At the helm is the Snapdragon 430 chipset with a 1.4GHz octa-core processor doing the number crunching. There are 2GB of RAM on board and storage is either 16GB or 32GB, expandable in both cases.

A 13MP f/2.0 primary camera with phase-detect autofocus sits on the back of the G5, and there's a 5MP f/2.2 wide-angle front-facing cam as well. The Moto G5 gets a fingerprint sensor below the display too - of the previous generation only the Plus had the feature.

Battery capacity is listed at 2,800mAh and the phone will charge at 10W, Motorola is keen to point out. The device measures 144.3x73x9.5mm and weighs in at 144g. The Moto G5 will boot Android Nougat out of the box, so no complaints on the OS front.

Motorola Moto G5 Plus

The Moto G5 Plus brings a few notable improvements, starting with a bump in display diagonal to 5.2 inches. More importantly, the 14nm Snapdragon 625 is in charge here, octa-core 2GHz chipset and all. There are different RAM and storage versions for the G5 Plus, the former either 2GB or 4GB and the latter 32GB or 64GB, again expandable.

The Moto G5 Plus' primary cam is different too - a 12MP dual-pixel sensor behind an f/1.7 aperture lens. 4K video recording is supported on this model, unlike the Moto G5. The two do share the same 5MP front shooter. The G5 Plus is treated to a larger battery, if only marginally so - 3,000mAh, and supports TurboPower charging. This one is a bit larger, naturally - 150.2x74x9.7mm, and weighs 155g.

The Moto G5 will be sold in Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and North America, beginning early next month. The Moto G5's price will start at €199 for the 2GB/16GB version, while the Moto G5 Plus ups that to €279 for the 3GB/32GB flavor and $229 for a 2GB/32GB handset, with a hint there at what's going to be available where.

Why should I get the Moto G5 over the Nokia 5? They both have the same CPU and same amount of RAM, they both have fingerprint readers, they both have metal bodies, they both run stock android nougat... And then the Nokia 5 runs 7.1.1 and has a 3000 m...

G5 yes, G5+ no.

I like the G5 duo, they seem like pretty decent mid-rangers from Moto. BTW that f/1.7 dual pixel 12 MP camera in the G5 Plus sounds a lot like the S7's snapper!
