Motorola Shamu (possible Nexus 6) gets benchmarked

12 August, 2014

Last month we heard a rumor about Motorola making the next Nexus smartphone, and it bearing the codename Shamu.

Now this exact device has apparently been benchmarked using GFXBench, and the results it achieved may give us an indication about some of its specs.

The Motorola Shamu definitely seems to be sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, since the numbers it managed in the benchmark are pretty much identical to those put up by other devices that are powered by the same SoC.

The Shamu is within one frame per second of the OnePlus One, and it's also close to the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One (M8), and Sony Xperia Z2. Needless to say, all of these have the Snapdragon 801 under the hood.

The LG G3 with its 2560x1440 screen performs noticeably worse than the rest of the pack, which clearly has something to do with all those pixels it needs to push. The fact that the Shamu is so far ahead of it too may mean that the Nexus 6 will not go QHD, and instead stick with the tried and tested 1080p resolution for its panel.

GFXBench usually publishes information about the specs of the handsets that take its test, but those haven't so far appeared for the Shamu, so unfortunately we can't really tell you much more about its innards right now.

Previously though, it was said to come with a 5.9-inch display, as well as a fingerprint scanner.

So it's going to called Shamu? Sounds like they had a "whale" of a time coming up with that name. Will it be a "killer" phone? We'll just have to wait and "sea"!
