MeeGo-based Nokia N9 with a 3.9-inch AMOLED announced

21 June, 2011
Nokia has just announced the MeeGo-based N9 smartphone at Singapore in Nokia Communications 2011. It is the first smartphone running on the Linux-based MeeGo operating system, jointly...

Anonymous, 22 Jun 2011The triumphant arrival of the N9 inevitably undermines that... moreIndeed this is a sample of what Nokia is capable to do. I hope next phones are greater than this one, even the lowed spec S40 will have a total tune-up.

Too bad for N8 and others will have to be sold at half of retails price. Those stills very capable but the specs are very lower (CPU/Video Hardware) a la par of the new incoming models.

But I'm pretty sure they will be well sold for not too demanding users. (Just like the olders 5800 and other classic phones from Nokia).

      Another lawsuit or what?

Apple wouldn't care if this phone doesn't sell... But if this sells as well as SGS. Lawsuit for sure.

The triumphant arrival of the N9 inevitably undermines that rationale today, but let's remember that it hasn't started shipping or selling yet. So the idea that MeeGo wouldn't be ready in time to keep the company competitive remains credible for now, though it disregards a more subtle point about what this new smartphone represents. The N9's big appeal is about the overall user experience, which is far less time-sensitive than a spec-centric device like the latest Android superphone. Even if it ships a few months from now, the N9 won't feel out of date (its OMAP3630 processor is already dated, showing just how refined and frugal the software on board is) and is still likely to offer an experience that's unique to Nokia. That, along with the expected ability to run Android apps via Myriad's Alien Dalvik software, will be happening even without Nokia committing all its resources to MeeGo, however the subsequent and nowadays requisite third-party developer support (in other words, the creation of a functionality-extending ecosystem) likely won't. If Nokia isn't fully invested in MeeGo and Qt, why should you be?

And that, dear friends, is why the delights of the N9 lead me to despondency. It's a terrific phone that's got me legitimately excited to use it, but its future is clouded by a parent that's investing its time and money into building up a whole other OS. MeeGo, and in particular its Harmattan variety, looks set to become the unfortunate victim of the cutthroat economics that dominate competition in the smartphone realm today. Which would be a damn shame considering the wonderful concepts it espouses.

Guys from SmashPop have shared the pricing of the device.

            Nokia N9 16GB version – $660 approx

            Nokia N9 64GB version – $749 approx

The information was provided by Colin Giles, Nokia’s EVP of Sales. Even the NewYorkTimes quoted a similar pricing.

I... morei agree with you it would be wise to work with ms as well but not abandon meego .From what i have seen so far form videos of n9 is the more responsive os out there even if it runs on not android specs phones.(Btw i tried gsII i dind get any enoynment form using it and i noticed some here and there (imagine on a dual core) especially in the gallery it's not all about specs after all).as for the apps meego is at a stage that android was when it started when it had no ecosystem and yet look how succesfull it has become

                          1.screen resolution is 854*480. Not 640*360.
2.the screen is only amoled not super amoled.
3.it has no sd card slot. In that site "up to 32 gb".
4.OS-meego1.2 and there is a picture of android robot.
5.the release dates are not confirmed yet.but they are saying it july 2011.

Kind of late! Why no dual core CPU???? Also why a camera downgrade and not an upgrade? The N8 had a 12mp camera and the N9 has a 8mp camera? Nokia really is suicidal…..

Droid has frozen problems and they are some sort of if. Even Samsung Galaxy has their GPS problems, Is hard to look perfection on tecnology. However the Nokias I see we didn't know problems, the worst are carrier problems.

Maybe they are there but we aren't noticed :D

And I don't trust any external site, that I learned with iPhone and Cydia had to restart so many times the iPhone for unwanted results of installing non certificated or altered software.

How do you get access to Android apps since you don't have The Market? Torrent? That's not going to be reliable since there's malwares in the Market itself and the chances of getting malwares outside of the Market is even higher.
