Bill, 20 Aug 2012All very well but why aren't they selling well then? I don'... moreThey both make too many models, and offer too few. I agree here. DEFY is a good series, and the update to DEFY+ was decent enough. They updated Droid/Milestone about yearly, but stopped offering them worldwide. Atrix then came and was great, too bad it came six months after the US model to most of Europe/Asia, after the SII and Sensation was already available. If they had come in February, as in the US, and marketed themselves properly, Atrix would have been what the SII was.

Atrix 2 was hardly any update, and not offered anywhere almost. Atrix HD looks great, but is US AT&T only. Many of the ones who are made for China Mobile only, also looks very appealing. Both top, mid and low range phones. Too bad they only sell them there. All in all Motorola offers three phones here at the moment DEFY+, Motoluxe and if you're lucky you could maybe find a RAZR or RAZR MAXX in a online store or perhaps retail. If it's difficult for us consumers to buy them, due to availability, then it's definetily not easy for Moto to sell them.

Perhaps Motorola's main problem is that all their carriers want different phones. Neither AT&T, Verizon nor Sprint want to have the same models. China mobile has their own ones too. Which of them willbe available to the rest of us seems almost to be random. To be honest, none of these carriers have any competition here, as they are not available here, hence all of them should technically be available here. Too many, but technically they should be.

International available line-up should be something like this

    Top range:
    RAZR HD
    Photon 4G (top to mid)

    Mid range:
    RAZR MAXX

    Budget/other:
    DEFY+
    Motoluxe
    New version of FlipOut

    Super budget:
    Gleam+

And both Moto and all the other major ones need to be alert. Newest phone from Xiaomi beats both the HW and price of any other phone available. 50 % more powerful CPU than Dual-core Krait and quad-core Exynos, a GPU far beyond any other, 2GB RAM, 4.3" HD IPS display, Jellybean and selection of 2000mAh or 3000mAh battery. All this at a mid range price.

Bill, 20 Aug 2012All very well but why aren't they selling well then? I don'... moreKey word: Marketing.

Motorola is barely marketing their products in other countries other than USA, Canada and perhaps a few others.

I've seen one tiny banner ad for the RAZR MAXX in one of the smaller norwegian online IT newspapers, with a "buy here" button, but the link led to the Motorola other European countries site. not even to the product page. Big fail. It would have been better if it had led to a kelkoo search of the phone.

Here in Norway I get spammed with Samsung, Sony, LG everywhere I look. And there's almost not a program on TV that does not have a Apple device placed in it.

Can I go to my carrier's (NetCom - part of Telia Sonera) website and purchase a Motorola device? No. Only between December 2011 and about February 2012 was that possible, and not directly easy since Motorola was the only one not showing on the front page and did not have their own category as the others. You had to search them up by name. This probably led to bad sales. + they were never featured in any of NetCom's magazines/commercial flyers.

Can I go to their franchise stores and buy one? No, 'cause the product manager of all franchise stores never allowed any Motorola phone to be sold in their stores. Which is weird, since they techinally are a official distributer. I was supposed to confront them about this, since they were sold online, but probaly someone else beat me to it and they were gone from their website.

Motorola isn't selling? Well, despite being so small in Europe and Asia, Motorola is still of biggest in the US, simply because they are actually visible there. And this helps them sell more world wide then Sony, in example, which is very very very visible here, and in any other country.

I don't dislike moto, the things you mention won't be noticed by the casual consumer whom it needs to appeal to, i'm just saying as of late, other than the Droid RAZR series, their making the mistake of making too much of the same with very little to differentiate with little timeframe in between to distinguish which model is which, much rather like what Sony is doing. I'd expect this to change with Google at the helm after the Next Nexus series. Let's hope Motorola make the Nexus handset or tablet.

Bill, 19 Aug 2012Ironically, despite being an Android user, I'm actually mor... moreWell let's see here. Motorola brought on KEVLAR as a new bulding material for phones, they brought Webtop, MotoCast, SmartActions and Lapdock to the world of Android. Anyone else? No? Just the boring plastics being pushed out, with a metal type every once in a while? Anything other than everyone offering their own UI? No.

Oh wait, forgot some cheapos offering MHL rather than the universally available HDMI, as Motorola has offered a long time now.

Moto is the only one bringing extra goodness and making new solutions.

RAZR Syndrome? They evolved from 2G antenna w/no EDGE, 176 x 220 pixels screen and VGA cam on to 3G antenna 1,3MP cam, then 2MP and HSDPA and so on.

This is todays standard. Keeping a series and evolving it. This is what Apple does with their iPhone, what Sony does with Xperia, HTC with One and Nokia with Lumia. If anyting, Motorola was ahead of it's time back then when everyone expected every new phone to look completely different, rather then evolving a design which was already good.

Motorola on the other hand are one of the more boring android vendors and aren't producing the spark they had from the original Droid. it's the RAZR syndrome all over again, remember 2004 with the original RAZR, rerun after rerun, it's happening again with the same name only this time Google own them.

Granted windows 8 looks very promising, the mobile experience is just a monotony filled with repetitive metro tiles with no sort of individuality or customization whatsoever, so changing the color of tiles beats rooting and doing anything you want with your phone, please! I'll give wp8 the benefit of doubt, and I'll try it out first before passing judgement.

Unless Motorola comes out with something really surprising, this just reeks with the desperation of Motorola trying to ride Nokia's publicity coattails. Another Android in the sea of androids. If rumors are true, it doesn't even have JB. Just ICS with a vague promise of JB in 2013.
