The article is not writing about abandoning Android software. It refers: "Sony has revealed plans to launch a Firefox-powered device in 2014".
Among android devices there will be one that has Firefix OS.
Personally speaking it is a clever move to give a variety of options to your costumer.
If you like it you buy it. If not buy something else.

To me, it's all about games (almost) and will Firefox OS be a good and common gaming platform? I doubt it, unless all Android games work on Firefox OS too... ...but not gonna happen. If Sony really abandons Android, then my next phone will be Samsung (i hope they will stick with Android). Sony, don't do it! DON'T!

Sony makes stylish and well-crafted phones that (IMHO) always suffered from 2 issues - relatively low raw performance and average display quality. Think Firefox can really make the difference performance-wise. It'll give Sony's phones a real competitive edge. Way to go Sony, you've chosen the right path.

There's always a learning curve in adapting to new OS. So in terms of ease of use and functionality, every OS is comparable. It is the ecosystem that the OS thrives on. The number of developers that are willing to invest resources into publishing an app to run under that OS is the key that make or break the OS.
