Sony releases AOSP Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for the Xperia Z

23 April, 2013
The SD card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and LED light as well as the sensors are all working well.

We all know Sony's got a bad rep when giving updates recently, treating the XS as a broad, thus breaking the purpose of having them a version of a Nexus line. We can still hope that Sony might change that kind of customer support satisfaction.

@RicAndroid: It's not their fault. a LOT of low-level drivers (wifi, NFC, 3G, that kind of stuff) are supplied with NDAs (Non-Diclosure Agreements) by vendors, so as much as Sony would like to publish them, they can't. Not without violating their agreements. While you and me don't really care about those (and happily violate said agreements), Sony violating those agreements has consequences, like not being given access to new hardware for integration in the next generation of phones or not given new software releases so they can't get new versions of Android running. Not to mention a lot of bad press from the inevitable lawsuit. Complain to Qualcomm-Atheros, Nvidia, Broadcom, PowerVR, TI, Realtek and other low-level vendors for their shitty licensing, not Sony.

@TheNeighbor: give them some more time to sort out licensing, and have some faith in the community: the XZ runs on the same hardware platform as the Nexus 4. I'm pretty sure someone will corss-port what's needed (3G/4G baseband) and Sony have promised to release NFC support shortly. Did you even read the article?

@chocowii: that's entirely dependent on Google (they literally contract out a design to the company that gives the best tender for device manufacturing).

Besides, as it stands right now, Sony devices are as close as you can get to the Nexus without getting a Nexus, with a fully unlockable bootloader and a good AOSP repo.

The HTC One reportedly has a fully unlockable bootloader (according to the mighty Koush), but I have yet to see HTC provide equally nice software support.

@Brain0: AOSP is base Android straight from Google with only patches for it to work on your device, as opposed to stock firmware with all the mabnufacturer modifications/addons like custom launchers, camera apps, themeing etc.

Its not beneficial to us directly, but having an AOSP repo means ROM and kernel devs (maybe you'll become one?) have a much, MUCH easier time building their custom stuff since there is already an existing, and more importantly, very usable base to work with.

i saw someone passed his Z around for looks and hands on to try, quite a handful of nasty comments expecially fron samsung fanatics and some compliments from other users.
But no one can explain to the owner, why is his phone covered in fingerprints...

And you know what he did next that shut those samsung fanatics? He washed his phone clean of all those dirt and asked can your S4 function after a bath?

If only i can self coat my pureview 808 with water resistant coating... I wont be feeling heart itchy all the time when i see a Z.

Are these AOSPs Sony released for the S and Z clues that Sony will be releasing a Nexus soon? A SONY NEXUS? Its gonna be an Android nirvana. A good hardware from Sony and good software from Google. Please Google, no more Nexus from LG and Samesung. Ill bet Sony and Motorola will be the next Nexus.

Brain0, 23 Apr 2013Hi Guys, Sorry guys to ask about ASOP, how can I benefit o... more- You can update your phone whenever Google pushes it through, instead of having to wait for your phone's brand to process the update with their crap. Cuts out the middle man.

                  - Less bloat

                  - Less restriction

                  - Easier to root

It doesn't matter if this will increase the silly 4-hour actual screen time of the XZ' present performance. You lose NFC and memory expansion functionalities with this software? It would become more useless, especially when it only came out with a 16GB with a washed out screen.

What is the point in restricting certain drivers/binaries? This kind of thinking is what prevents certain phones to get CyanogenMod....for example, the Sidekick 4G.

Eagerly teasing google to manufacture ... moreDouglas , look at what you are saying, wow! u dnt even have the xz so i dunno how you came to ur conclusions. i was dubious at first then when i got it i was amazed at how pocketable it was. The battery was a bit s### at first so was the screen, but after 2 weeks it all made sense. the battery adapts to your habbits. the screen also improves, maybe they need running in! lol. now wen i go back to sgs3 the screen just looks too fake like a cartoon or some crazy grafitti. seriously this phone is the nuts and watching movies in the bath is a bonus! 8 cores blah blah blah blah blah
