Any user that have had a phone with one of the extremely unstable earlier versions of WP are VERY reluctant to waste their money on it again. So MS have to fight uphill in gaining new phone-users, and to try to persuade previous users that their new versions are less horrible than e.g. the 6.x
Personally I think I'll wait for WP 9.x or 10.x or 11.x or ....

problem with wp is that it tries to rival iOS, when they should be rivaling Android. As much as android is good, I would like to see other OS'es in stronger positions to keep the competition very active.
