TSMC was unsuccessful in moving the chip design to their own 28nm Intel Gate Last HKMG process. Samsung is not just a dedicated chip fabrication house like TSMC and do not have the in house expertise, because they don't design chips themselves. They only take Designs customers bring to them to fabricate. The process move is extremely difficult even for a someone like Intel or Samsung, let alone a dedicated chip fabricator only.
Also keep in mind that Samsung has a direct connection to ARM by way of them being their lead foundry. ARM themselves only recently were able to move to TSMC's Gate Last process technology.
Now does this mean TSMC can't be tapped to fabricate Apple A8 or A9? NO! ...it doesn't and there might be a case for TSMC being a second go to foundry on some A8 production. But Samsung won the major contract to produce A8 and A9 on their 14nm HKMG 3D Stacked process fabrication methods. Because TSMC was having trouble and Samsung has superior quantities of chip Wafers in Stock. In fact they are the #1 producers of Silicon Wafers!
In all reality Apple had no choice, because Intel even with factories empty and waiting for jobs in a slowing PC market couldn't switch processes to Samsung IBM's Common Platoform Alliance methods to help Apple. AND... in all actuality, Samsung is on the verge of going ahead of Intel in Revenue in the next 3 yrs. To become the #1 Chip producer by Revenue and volume. TSMC produces a lot of chips, but they are for customers other than themselves and cost is high, while profits are marginal. Samsung makes a ton of money off Apple now that they reduced their volume discounts.
But even Apple said after getting hit by as much as a 20% increase in costs that they had no choice, but to continue using Samsung as their main chip supplier. Now with Samsung leading all memory design and fabrication houses by investing a total of over $60 Billion over the last two years in CAPeX spending, they are destined to have a long and prosperous future as a chip fabricator. It's a supply and demand market and wherever there is the greatest demand like in Memory over 2013 and Apple's chips, there you'll the most lucritive contracts going to a company like Samsung who is best prepared for it! :D

Apple designed the chip and chose to build it under that proces and chose Samsung and Tmsc grounds to manufacture themthe only chips Samsung has the rights to be called Samsung's are Esynos and they suffer from low energy utilization,compability.They should always use Snapddragon chips until they make their homegrown Exynos worthy of their brand. And they are not energy efficient.
. But what it takes to make people drool over hate and excitement is hearing Samsung manufactures a part (more than half) of A7 chips and they create fan fiction out of pure hate and jealousy.
And this my friend is coming from an Android fan/user.My daily driver until 6 months before was a Note 2 on Cyagen.often people become paranoid from people who criticize their brands and then they have the courage of calling Apple fans "sheep" the term invented by Samsung to make people feel bad for owning Apple products to maximize their profits because they couldn't in amother manner at the time when they appeared on the game. I'm okay with brands advertising their features but one thing I can't tolerate is being insulted for owning a certain product be it Apple,LG ,Motorola,HTC or whatever.

Samsung are far more responsible for Apple's PA Semi PWRficient 64bit dual core SoC shrink than Apple is (from 65nm to 28nm for a huge shrink). In fact Apple never even invented their own A7 SoC at all. They are more akin to Gyspy Barkers selling snake oil as if they were the snake and didn't even produce the fake snake oil to begin with. They're only having their shills buy it, while forming lines all going baahh baahhh like sheep on their way to get "Clipped" of their excess Cash.
One thing that's so very true about a Circus Barker like Apple, they are artists/showman for sure.... but only Magically doing only one thing. Making fools of those that see them as their God, instead of the Charlatans they really are!
Like everything else with Apple's claims to have invented anything, they only just bought it.... already done for them. Then somehow are still able to convince all their loyal ignorant fool fans out there, that they invented it.... FIRST!
That may be their greatest genius I guess, but at what? Snaking their own customers and fooling the public into believing they are something they're simply not. Not as in end to end manufacturers like Samsung. More like HP, CISCO, Microsoft, DEll, etc all only Design Houses totally outsourced. Instead of real producers of Technology they don't even invent or build the parts for or manufacture in the first place!
In 2008 when Apple merely bought PA Semi, they already had 64bit dual core SoC designs and some MP core designs up to 16 cores. All Apple did was buy the Genius behind these designs along with PA Semi. Then they bought Intrinsity out from under their best partner Samsung to make them even more efficient. Hardly Revolutionary themselves.
Next came having the genius behind AMD's 64bit Opterons (Jim Keller) remap ARM's ARMv8 Instruction Sets (also nothing they invented) to these SoC shrink designs on Samsung's HKMG Gate First Fabrication Process Technology. What came out then is just another A7 iSnake Oil SoC design sporting a new name. Certainly without anything actually designed by Apple themselves and they certainly can't claim to have invented or spent even a fraction of the Billions Samsung and ARM did over years of perfecting their Own 64bit ARM and Exynos Chip designs. Along with the fabrication technology and hardware to go with that to make it a REALITY! ....not and RDF figment of their imagination!
BTW.... it doesn't take a whole lot of common sense to figure out that a company that only ever spends a few Billion at most on R&D a year(never ranked higher than #46 on R&D big spenders) simply can't compare to the #1 and #2 big spenders for years in IBM and SAMSUNG while spending Multi-Billions more!!! ....and yeah it's Samsung's partner IBM, that never gets the credit for INVENTING the very basis of 64bit RISC processing architecture in both ARM's and PA Semi's Chip Designs!

The reality at least for the Galaxy Notes, you can't run them without Touchwiz. Because the features Touchwiz bring are the heart and soul of the Galaxy Note Series.
It's about utilizing the all of Samsung's hardware features, no other platform has and that includes Apple. Samsung's custom SoC processors are loaded with with things like dual video i/O and it's this feature Samsung uses to run video, apps or tasks in PiP or PoP on the same screen. Touchwiz is also responsible for Samsung's True Pervasive Multitasking that Apple can't do at all.
This is why they only bother to put third the memory on their devices. They can't utilize it because Apple's root file system is an archaic old reject from original Mac days 30yrs ago. When they had no OS kernel, used Floppy Drives and ran on single threaded chips. Touchwiz itself is awesome now and it's been around since 2005 on Symbian and WinMo to enable touchscreens on better smartphones than iPhone. In fact SCH-Z610 totally outclassed original iPhone with real GPS, 3G radio, IR remote, gesture based 3.5" touchscreen, round physical home button Apple stole, and rounded corners. It also used the Stainless Steel bezel Band as an antenna, before 4yrs before iPhone 4. But had an internal antenna with an auto switch for best reception. So Antennagate wasn't an issue! ;-P
Galaxy Note..... once you use S-pen with it's full pervasive multitasking and drag n drop, window to window simplicity and productivity, you'll never go back to Apple Suspend one task to run another ridiculously fake multitasking! ;-P

I really love Note Series. I have been using Note 1 and boy it's really deserve King of phablet Title. .. not single problem still serve me as good as first day. Other companies phablets are also good but no match for Galaxy Note Series.. its start new trend in mobile industry. Fan of Samsung, Nokia and Sony

Yeah 640 p isn't the latest and greatest but really would you need 1080 p on a 4 inch form factor ? Even other Oems don't do that. As for the screen yeah it's small but that changes with people there are a lot of people who want that forfactor like z1 compact you can reach all 4 corners of the screen with a finger. Apple is somehow proud of claiming that mobility on their phones but that just want cut it for me to go and buy one. They should keep the 5c at the same size and max out the 6 at 4.7 inches. That would be nice. You think people.who criticize Samsung are all Apple fans ? There are a lot of issues with Samsung phones too ie. Touchwiz who also Android fans hate. But I never said they were doing bad. They just need tochange their business philosophy in build quality and software. Touchwiz should be more clean and light on resources like vanilla Android. And Galaxy S 5 is the right place to start from. That being said I think Note 3 is the first smartphone/tablet which has everything hardware wise to enjoy Android a big battery,gorgeous screen, Snapdragon 800, a trick up its sleeve to shoot video in 4k even though the camera gets shaky because It doesn't have ois and it is not software optimized to resist shaky hands but hey it's still 4k recording who else does that ? None. And 3 gb of ram which are much needed for android especially for a skin like touchwiz.

Yes Samsung manufactured it but there is a big difference between manufacturing and building + designing. Samsung can't even fix their own scrappy exynos chips how could they build a superchip like A7. Samsung should invest a lot of time and money if they want their homegrown exynos to take off in their devices just like Qualcomm invested time and money into making those amazing chips we have on Android . They should always go with Qualcomm not with 2 variants ,that until or if they make Exynos processors worthy for the consumer.
