I have a question:
It has always been my understanding that the reason why we saw RAM in the normal sizes (2, 4, 8, 16, etc.) in the PC world was due to the fact that for optimal performance you needed to have matched pairs... I guess I was under the impression that they synced & that the OS could access them as one memory unit- not, say, as one 1gb chunk and a 2nd 2gb chunk.
However, I've been seeing a lot of 3gb phones lately. Why not 4gb? Are binary derivative RAM denominations no longer in vogue?? Are the ways these operating systems access RAM different than in the past? What am I missing?

Well you have to park the Android bloatware somewhere so I suppose now we need a device with 3GB RAM to operate the hardware and spyware. Where will it end?

If it means "subjective", then no, this ain't discerning at all, its merely biased. If it means like GSMarena's totally objective audio quality test, then we are in agreement.

Unfortunately, the state of Android is such that OEMs can only compete mainly on the hardware front, leading to wastage such as this. Even if they optimize, they will lose sales, as Android customers only read what's on the tech spec list, and don't look at qualitative tests (the majority, not the discerning few).
