Nokia Store now has over 100K apps, Distimo says

22 December, 2011

We haven't been hearing much about the Nokia application store lately, but this doesn't mean it hasn't been making significant progress. According to the researchers from Distimo, which specialize in app store analysis, the official Nokia app repository has surpassed the 100,000 mark.

The exact count, according to Distimo, is 116,583, which is enough to make the Nokia Store (formerly known as Ovi Store) the third largest app repository in the mobile world. It took Nokia two and a half years to accomplish this (the store launched on May 26 2009), which isn't quite as impressive as the market leaders.

To put things into perspective it took Android a year and a half (from March 2009 to October 2010) to do the same, while the App Store went from 500 to 100,000 in a year and 5 months.

There's one important thing to note here though. While the Nokia Store does have all those apps, they aren't accessible on any single device as some of them are for Symbian, others are for S40, while others still are MeeGo-only.

Still, 100,000 means that there are plenty of apps in there, more than anyone could possibly download in their lifetime. Now if they could bring the quality up a notch and persuade developers to bring their apps there shortly after they are available (as opposed to months and years later) it would be just great.
