Original Nokia X trio getting a software update

28 July, 2014

The original Nokia X trio is getting a software update – no, not Nokia X Platform 2.0, that they'll never get. But a few features from v2.0 have been ported over so users who bought the Nokia X, Nokia X+ or Nokia XL can enjoy the new app switcher.

To access it, you swipe down and hit the button in the notification area (sounds convenient, doesn’t it?). Apps can also be closed from the switcher by hitting the X key.

More Microsoft services are being loaded onto the Nokia X phones – Outlook, OneDrive and OneNote are all integrated into the platform after the update. You'll be able to add multiple Outlook accounts and get push notifications and contact/calendar syncing. Also, up to 500 OneNotes will be synced with the phone.

If you haven’t installed the Nokia Store update already, don't worry, it's part of the new software package. It integrates third-party app stores so you can install all apps from one place. It also comes with a new Spotlight widget to promote app discovery.

Some of these features you may have gotten from the 1.1.2.2 update from a couple of months ago.

Go to Settings > About phone > System updates > Check now to see if the Nokia X Platform update is available in your region. If you run into difficulties you can follow this detailed guide.

In case you haven't heard, the Nokia X Platform is practically dead and all planned X phones will be switched to Windows Phone instead. As for the original three, chances are slim they'll ever get an OS switch.
