Sony Ericsson W880 review: No catch, plain thin

06 February 2007
Sony Ericsson W880 is the newest addition to the Sony Ericsson Walkman line. Nothing uncommon here, we’ve seen lots of those. The most unusual thing about it though is its form factor – an ultra slim bar-shaped handset with plenty of cool features to offer. Take 3G network support, add a 2 megapixel camera, spice it up with a M2 memory card slot and Bluetooth and finally put it all in the slimmest shell possible and you will get a great result – the Sony Ericsson W880.

Ok I have both the W850i and W880i

while both phones are great - in truth i have not used the radio before...

The led flash is a let down on the w880i however when i take photos with the w850i its quite grainy and most of the time i get red eye in images. Best to use the night mode when taking photos and also with the flash attachment which you buy separately. I guess if you really wanted to take pictures go for the k series.

The speaker on the 880 as mentioned in the review is not as great as the 850. The walkman mode is fantastic after listening for 3 hrs constantly it uses minimal batt life

W850i
Good - Batt life, walkman mode, os is great and easy to use lots of flexibility, speaker phone is loud and quite crisp, sleek slider design, number pad great for games, the top left + right buttons for the camera gallery.

Bad - the navigation buttons was wierd at first, the camera can get dust caught at the back, the walkman button is sometimes pressed by accident when i slide open the phone.

W880i
Good - Batt life, walkman mode, os is great and easy to use lots of flexibility, buttons are easy to use, sexy slim with a touch of class

Bad - slim means heating problems however after 40 min on the phone it was a touch warm - better than expected
buttons might be a bit small for ppl with large hands

Note: there are alot of similarities with both phones

In conclusion both phones are great i recommend them for anyone who listens to music - but both suit different needs

I hope this helps ppl that are interested in these phones

The name of the theme with the menu in one line is called Cityline and it's pretty cool, when using Walkman and you return to the main screen, it's red and constantly displays the name of the song. The main downside to this phone is the reception. I had the w850 before and even tho they're both on tri-band, w880 has worse reception. However, the w880 is significantly smaller. No FM radio does not matter to me since I live in a small city where the radio sucks.

Does anyone know what is the name of the theme (the 2nd page of the review by GSMArena), where the menu icons are in one line???? It looks like Orbit, but not quite. I got this phone from Vodafone, but looks like this theme was not pre-installed...

                  its quite a bummer that they did not put any FM radio on such a high end music phone like that... and whats worst, the camera has no LED flash! I'd rather get the w900 or the w850 and it has way more quality of loudspeakers as this review says... its sexy though =}

I currently own a w850i and the battery life is great better than my previous 6280. So it would apply here - no Radio is a let down however i hardly use it since i am always uploading music to my phone. Otherwise they couldve made the screen size larger and possibly made the video camera a better res. symbion... hmm not sure if se will implement it however atm i think there os is pretty good.

Does the headset HPM-80 (w900) fit the w880?...This could be a solution to the missing fm radio...

A note to SIM card switchers: It's quite hard to get the SIM card out. Try before you buy.

I may buy one anyway, but will keep my old phone to avoid card switching.

This phones sick, big change for SE with size and its paid off witht the 3g intact. Sound very impressive inc wid headfones. yes buttons are dodgy, bt fank god for shortcuts. SE has the best user interface, i got the phone on o2 bt it works fine wid a voda sim. Light slim sexy and unique for SE. now i had a w900i, loved it, evn wid its 2mg cam it workd like a 3. shame u cant zoom wen takin pics, bt honestly u wont care wid the looks of the fone.

I used to have a Z1010 and I miss my SE :( the only thing I'd like to know before I went back to a SE is, have they removed the 100 message limit for SMS messages yet? That's the only thing that really bothers me... even Nokia series 40 phones go up to about 1000 messages, which I find pretty handy...
