HTC Touch2 review: Beyond the basics

02 November 2009
Affordable isn't the most common word in the HTC vocabulary but a company whose sole line of business is smartphones is not quite expected to speak the language of the masses. That said, we really need to define affordable first...

On the Telecom New Zealand network, this phone has had the most customer complaints. Most are to do with poor signal quality. Also this phone has a lot of issues with data connections, easily fixed by taking out the battery, but very annoying.

I got this phone a while ago and have been extremely disappointed with it. These are my main gripes, though I see the reviewer has some others in addition to these.

1)It's nigh on impossible to see the screen contents in anything brighter than medium-ambient light, if you are out in the sun - forget it!

2)You have no choice but to use the stylus because trying to hit the icons with a finger or scroll with a finger will result in opening an app you didn't want. I'm a woman so it's not a case that I have large fingers! This is especially a problem for texts and writing notes/documents etc., because you can't turn the keyboard sideways which means it is so small you have no choice but to use the stylus which is time-consuming.....one finger typing basically!

3)The battery does not last nearly as long as claimed by the manufacturers, even if you turn off the data connection to preserve it.

4)You can't take a photo in anything other than daylight because there is no flash.

5)The selection on the marketplace is abysmal compared to it's competitors. 563 apps listed, of which 173 are games. The rest are low-budget options leading to limited and/or obsure applications, e.g. In "Books" you get 4 versions of the Bible, Bookworm which gives you access to Project Gutenberg (great if you want 1923's best seller!), AllReader costs £9.69 and all it does is flip the screen sideways, otherwise, you might just as well download to memory and read through Word for free, PocketComic which cost £3.69 and according to the reviewers does not work on the HYC Touch2, and SpeeedReader (that's the correct spelling - honest!) which has no touch control - and app for a touch-screen phone with no touch control. Hmmm.

Well, you get the idea. This is one product I wish I'd never bought. Next time I'll pay more attention to the basic capabilities, which I wrongly took for granted, before shelling out hard-earned dosh.

mimi, 13 Jun 2010i was thinking of buying this phone,, is this a good idea ???If you get one that freezes you're in trouble, but if you get a good one and you're okay with the resolution of the screen (quarter of VGA) it's actually pretty nice. You'd probably get used to a higher resolution quickly, but that has it's price of course.

The freezing is the biggest issue with this one, after several repairs still the same problem. Sometimes it'll randomly die on you, only solutions: taking out the battery and putting it back in or giving it another powersource, then you can switch it on again like nothing happened at all. Most annoying, I hope they manage to fix it someday because I like the rest, just as a phone it's still an epic fail.

I read a review of this phone on CNet saying that there is voice command function, but then some user reviews (also on CNet) say that there is no voice command and voice dial. Can someone who has this phone please confirm whether there is voice command and voice dialing or not please? (ie. can I record myself saying someone's name and associate that sound with a number, and then press the call button from my bluetooth headset and say that name, and the phone will start calling that number?) Thanks!

In my new HTC Touch2, FM Radio says it's playing
but no voice is heard either on speaker or headphone.
Is it a defect or does it need more setting up?
Another important drawback is, for internet
access, DNS could not be setup.
