HTC HD2 review: Portrait of a rockstar

17 November 2009
Quietly brilliant is what HTC like to call themselves and they’ve been giving enough proof lately. But allow us to disagree. The last thing to call the HD2 is quiet – the monster of a PocketPC simply screams rock'n'roll...

I got the HTC HD2 and have the following issues:

1.Excel works only in potrait mode not landscape, which is very annoying when you have a decent size spreadsheet with fixed coloumns.

    2. Can not open password protected spreadsheets which is dangerous if you lose the phone as sensitive information can be visible to all.

3.I downloaded a Java app, freecaddie, had difficulty initially installing. Having overcome that, HTC tell me that a quicklink can not be created for a a Java app, so everytime I need to use it, I need to go through many steps rather than shortcut.

4.Bluetooth connect does not automatically activate to sync with active sync, very important if one is always in an out of office and syncing with work pc needs to be up to date.

Reading the reviews for the HD2 it mentions you can access "almost" any app from the home tab screen shortcuts. Could you choose to access the "office" app for example?

Ps Hi Tony, no the phone does not have a secondary camera for video calls.

This makes me doubt that you ever even seen an HD2, and even less had one in your hand.

I've had this phone for a month now and would definitely recommend.

I was very close to getting an iphone - glad I didn't.

My wife has an iphone so I've had plenty of time to compare. I've had Nokias and WinMo phones in the past and the HD2 is best by far.

Screen - fast UI, browsing, read a whole email at arms length, videos, google maps detail/speed is awesome (I use it more than the in-car GPS), I can use it easily with one hand (large=less wrong thumb presses)
OS flexibility - file explorer, basically a computer in your hand, easy torrent downloads from my phone!
MS Excel is a dream to use considering such a small device
All included apps are actually good (Bus Card reader awesome)
              many others...

              Dislikes:
3 clicks to get to the Task Manager (at least it has one though)
Telstra locked quick links (get rid of them at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623162)
The occasional WM6.5 screens that you come across in advanced settings

What ever you decide - enjoy!

I had a similar problem with music, so I copied the artist/album/file structure from my PC rather than put all the files in one folder. 12Gb of files playing like a dream.

This is an unbelievably good phone although it took a few weeks to get it set up and working as I wanted it. Definitely not one for people after an out of the box phone!

Check out xdadevelopers.com for some really good tweaks and mods.

Why do companies have to build phones with capacitive screens? Ok so you can use your fingers on them making them far more user friendly for fingers...however not everyone has fingertips available. Don't get me wrong, capacitative touch screens are great but not everyone has the ability to get a soft touch to the actual screen. Moreover most of these screens are small making each button difficult to target. Those of us with finger nails prefer resistive screens so that we can reach the buttons with our finger nails !!! Try touching a screen with your finger side on !!! Please relay this to various phone companies so that all phones don't try to be Apple-esque (Apple like). Not everyone likes the iPhone.

                  Cheers

mike, 17 Dec 2009Hey gsmarena.com, why is "Card slot under the battery cover... more"Does anybody ever need to remove memory cards while using a phone?"
                          Err yes
ever owned 2 or more memory cards?
ever had to move pictures from a friends memory card unto yours?
Have you tried to view documents on another card whereby there was no pc?
Ever tried to view pics on your friends phone that is about to turn off due to battery low?
Bluetooth is capable but not as fast as hot swappable cards.

I have been using HTC HD2 for 3weeks now. A switchover from Nokia
gagdets.I think its one of the best phones available now. We all can hardly say its the best but definitely one of the best.

Furthermore to buy a phone, we all have to research and get reviews on how the phone functions rather just buy blindly without knowing the pro&cons of a phone. No point dissing out how bad the phone is..
ITS isnt BAD at all. Camera ? it need to be improved but given if you are adaptable and knows how to configure camera setting auto balance etc .. you are doing fine. HTC had begun to put flash in recent phones they introduce and i think they have progress from there.

Even so they had greatly improved from the first HTC they introduced.

There are many categories of users - Androids/symbian/winmo/Apple..
whatever it is, some pple are USED To the configurations hence have a preference over a particular OS. IF you are a TECH savvy person, you should be adaptable to all OS available out there.

And by the way, i wont buy iphone for my phone usage though..not because its lousy but rather that if i want to use apple? i would go for ipod or its PC.That would fully utilise its best package that it can offer.I have use iphone however .. given the hype it receive in Asia, i did played with it and help others who are totally clueless with Itunes and app store (i dont really like that ITunes)for its synch problems i faced occasionally n rigidity functions.

What i think abt iphone .. iphone = mac = nice packaging n graphic..
its always been their design n graphical UI that fascinated people. i think thats why iphone is so likable. Camera wise .. its also so-so.. nothing great. IF anybody want to use a camera.. for god sake.. get a REAL camera.. anyway we have been around long enough to appreciate that camera phone have improved way long enough from VGA types.

Anyway iphone only gets better with jailbreak function and its bluetooth function .. is still primitive as it cant talk to other phones .. it doesn allow to fix certain problem like flash .. i cant play my farmville.

I installed skyfire for MY htc To browse and it utilise the flash player so my online games works pretty fine. But unfortunately for ipod/iphone doesnt work that way since it doesn have flash inbuilt.

anyway .. everyone disagree n agree with whatever everybody saying. I just hope that future phones for HTC will be greater.. like Nexus one.. i see great possibility.

I brought my HTC HD2 at the beginning of Dec, i think the phone is excellent for my needs, my last phone was the Xperia X1 which i loved but i also did like the iphone except it was'nt windows os. But now i have both in my HD2. I did have the pink circle & SMS prob that a few peeps suffered with but after downloading the hotfix it seems fine.
My battery only seems to last a day tho, might invest in another to see if there's any differance.
I've just brought a mirrored screen protector for it...Amazing!!
If you thought it looked good before get one of these. :o)

Got my HD2 this week on Voda, works like a dream and didnt come with the annoying "pink" error on the camera, did all the updates and it runs perfectly, just need my memory card to arrive as 2GB is nothing... Battery suprisingly enough has been great, my Hero runs out in a day whilst this has lasted two and a half days, with wifi on always and msn messenger running, had a bad run in though when I put the HD2 in my pocket with my Hero, totally tore up the Hero's screen when i removed it via the extremely dangerous lense lip of the HD2 :D

Luckily i had a screen shield on but it dug in deep - the screen was saved luckily...

Who else has got an HD2 then ? And what do u think of it ....
