Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II preview: Second encounter

13 April 2011
Having earned its place in the Android hall of fame, the original Galaxy S can start thinking about retirement. And these won’t be thoughts of fear and worry. With a replacement on its way, the veteran can look forward to getting the respects it deserves...

Kam , 27 Apr 2011Loving some of the comments on here LOL..... As for the ... moreI was the flipside to you...
Had an HTC Hero, which should have been named "HTC Zero" - because that's the amount of software support I had for that phone...
Then I got a Galaxy S - Sammy has updated this phone (so far) 4 times including the new Gingerbread...
If you're worried about support from Sammy - I think they've learned their lessons...
As for deciding between Sensation and GS2... tough call - specs wise the GS2 has it easily, but looks, Sensation easily...
I'm waiting for the Doubleshot I reckon - basically a Sensation with a slide-out keyboard (great for those emulators)

hey, could you guys at gsmarena or anyone else who really has this phone tell us if the SGS2 has zooming in the 1080p video mode? and does it work like in the N8? If I remember seeing correctly, the HTC Sensation has something of that sort. Could someone please clarify this?
            Thanks!

Kam , 27 Apr 2011Loving some of the comments on here LOL..... As for the ... moreI had the Samsung i8910 and I agree that the level of support was atrocious from Samsung. Samsung used it to test how successful a Samsung Symbian based phone would be. The bottom-line was was that it was hamstrung as Nokia had the rights to all the best software on Symbian so ultimately it arguably was a failure however their question was answered and they promptly dumped Symbian. The phone itself was well designed and sold moderately well and from a production point of view there was nothing wrong with it however it is naive to believe that just because one product from a manufacturer does not have a good level of support then all products in the future will the same. The SGS2 uses Android which is at the beginning of its life not at the end like Symbian. The original Galaxy s1 was a good phone and the support from Samsung was good so for me I will buy the SGS2 in full confidence.

Now the retail SGS2 is available, as the current reviews from Engadget & Techradar dont have any decent benchmarks, can we have GSMarena's FULL review of the retail unit, including your usual tables of benchmarks comparing against similar competitive models ? As the Techradar review reckons the WiFi is weak but doesn't elaborate, can you publish a table of WiFi Bandwidth vs Distance - for both the 2.4 and 5GHz bands ?

When will gsmarena start having GPS reviews? Something proper like checking tracks and comparing to real routes? It is essential in modern phones and it was a TOTAL FIASCO in the Samsung Galaxy I, but few reviewers even noticed it.

Is the GPS still useless like in Galaxy 1? Does it also lag a lot due to the lame filesystem like galaxy 1?

Oh, and dont worry about the size. I dont know why but for such a big phone t fits in my hand really well. Maybe as its so slim and light.
                                    Love it. :)

Loving some of the comments on here LOL.....

As for the phone being plastic....one could always buy a case...you know, one of those things that protect your phone. Even my HTC Desire is protected by a case.....made out of ten foot thick lead...I wear spandex ;O)

I for one am torn between this and the HTC Sensation.... I swore I would never buy a Samsung phone again after my experience with i8910 and the horrific level of support the Samsung gave it's UK consumers. I had a hands on session with the HTC Sensation at the London event and it is a very, very nice phone and after my faultless experience with the Desire it's gonna take more one glowing review and a spec sheet longer then a roll of toilet paper to sway me.....Remember the i8910 anyone???

But this phones spec is quite frankly mind numbingly monsterous...it really is a beast and if Techradars review is to be believed then this is the dogs, sheeps cows bxxxxxxx!!!!

As far as suing etc is concerned...WHO CARES!!!!! As long as we as consumers gets the best usable technologies in our hands. Leave it up to the Lawyers, Judges and the companies making billions from us wee people to sirt it out.

I will decide after more reviews and further hands on experience through actual user via the forums....I'm due an upgrade so will not be paying for the phone anyway....

Lets all take a deep breath, calm down, change our underwear and WATCH THIS SPACE!!!....
