Nokia 808 PureView in low-light: From dusk till dawn

20 June 2012
The fact that Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone money can buy is sure as shooting. This won't even pass for a pun. The 41 megapixel sensor and the tack-sharp optics deliver what no other smartphone can match and we even saw it successfully stand its ground against much heavier competition.

AnonD-348074, 03 Jan 2015I've brought Nokia 808 pureview 1st for its photo quality ,... moreI've owned this phone in the past as well and I do agree with you on the red-eye problem when it comes to group photos. But it really performs good on everything else in the imaging department.

I've brought Nokia 808 pureview 1st for its photo quality , 2nd in respect for Damian Dinning. I prefered symbian because I was fed up with windows 8 (not 8.1) limitations on lumia 620. But in room lighting condition w/wo flash while taking any group picture, the Red Eye effect is too much.

Despite having 808 I can't use my phone for group pics ...
But I must say photo quality is up to my expectation when i use it for non living things...

The phone hangs too much and connecting 3g is dependent on your luck.

"Granted, the smartphone can't keep up with the dynamic range of its APS-C sensor-packing competitor, but the noise and detail levels are quite close."

Noise is removed via noise reduction, which also reduces the resolution. And if the resolution is close to the 550D's, it's pretty poor result considering that the absolute resolution in 550D is only about half of its 18 mp and Pureview is ADVERTIZED as a 41 mp camera phone.

Pretty much expected... just remember that those 38MP's are only available at wide angle.

808 puts a very good show with the sensor size it has.

DSLR and ILC systems have the lens advantage... if you spend a bit of money on some lens. It saddens me a bit that they picked 'old' cameras with not the best glass in front of them.

Samsung Galaxy S III could have been replaced by a compact camera, where photo sites size are similar.

E-PL2 could have been replaced with a Nikon 1 system camera, that, I believe, has a similar sensor size (E-PL2 is rather bad for the sensor size it has)

Given the size of the Canon 550D, it would be better to have used something like a Sony NEX or a Lumix GX1 (same as E-PL2, just performs a lot better), at least those fit in the coat pockets when paired with a pancake lens. If you are pondering on 808 as a camera, you probably won't be comparing it with a bulky DSLR...

Anyway, it was a valid comparison that brings some enlightenment over 808 camera capabilities. Only missing now is the digital zoom vs optical zoom of a cheap compact (a Canon A800 for example) regarding noise and resolution at various ISO's :]

Well I like the test and the pureview results, wouldn't mind having one for me but I think you could had done better in the ISO test as it would be nice to do have it compared with last years Sony Ericsson Arc which I have.
The Arc is great with high ISO values and with low light so it would be good to have it here. I have done photos up to 2.500 ISO and although I am not sure, I think it can go up to ISO 4.500 although that gives rubbish photos so I would love to see the Pure View compared to the Arc and not something a bit uninteresting photo wise, as the SGSIII which is a not that great in terms of ISO and low light sensibility.
It was kind of pointless comparing PureView with SGSIII
