Motorola RAZR i review: Intel inside

9 October 2012
The RAZR line that Android helped revive is to be looked at with nothing but pride but Motorola should realize it had more luck than others. Giants like Siemens and Alcatel that used to shape the industry have been almost completely wiped from the map, while Moto stayed afloat and was acquired by no other than Google...

Battery life ?
This was the main question about Intel, and no word on that :))

Nick, 13 Oct 2012>>> Better than 160, but safe to say it is very fa... morePixelation on 3 gs and older, obviously, the PPI is lower than lowest end models today, ofcors HVGA displays are pixelated, the pixels are gigantic. If you mean ip 4 or newer then i assume you mean you can see jagged edges, they will always be visible where theres no antialiasing.

I have a one year old Nokia N9 here, Pentile Amoled. When i bought it i didnt know about Pentile matrix, i was not aware of it. When i first got the N9 and opened the webbrowser i immediately noticed that small fonts was of very bad quality. Me being a Linux enthusiast immediately concluded that this was normal, it was a brand new OS and new everything, ofcors the early firmware in my N9 didnt have TrueType Fonts installed, but that would be so easy for me to fix, with all my linux experience, how many times before had i installed TTF on my Debian PCs, for sure i could fix that.

By now we all know that it had nothing to do with TrueType Fonts, what i saw was coz of the pentile matrix. Unlike you i didnt have to wait for anyone to tell me that this kind of displays has a low perceived resolution, i saw it at once that something was wrong. And whats the PPI of Nokia N9? Its 251!! Virtually the same as the 256 on Razr i. Then i dont need to go to the store for that, i have experience with the shortcomings of Pentile.

by the way, "AMOLED power consumption is a big bonus for mobile device", thats wrong. Why AMOLEDs cannot compete with the fruit dealer on webbrowsing endurance? Because AMOLED has a lower power efficiency, they consume unreasonable much battery because of all the white backgrounds on the web. OTOH, AMOLED scores well on video playback, because theres alot of black pixels in video.

Still, i am willing to give Razr i a chance, i really want to try an intel based phone.

I have been using this phone for a week now, having switched from an iPhone 4. I did alot of reading on kindle and did notice the pixels on the RAZR I. Changed background to sepia, problem solved. I love this phone, bought instead of iPhone 5.

Looks like I will buy RAZR i because it is the best compact phone on the market. No competitors.
I will use it for 1.5-2years and then I hope there will be compact phone with HD.

              >>> Pentile matrix is a little obvious.

              It depends.
I can see pixelation on iPhones, I can see on One S. I can live with PPI on iPhone, I can live with One S PenTile. It is like old Sony Trinitron monitors with two small strings. I did not notice them until somebody showed me, then I looked on them only.
I would prefer HD AMOLED with Note 2 arrangement. I think that color reproduction is not so important on smartphones. You will not edit photos for printing on a phone, right. But AMOLED power consumption is a big bonus for mobile device. I think AMOLED is the best technology for smartphones.
              IMHO, IMHO, IMHO.

Advice. Go two the closest smartphone store, take One S, RAZR, RAZR i anything with qHD PenTile display and check if YOU see pixels and if YOU can live with that.

His opinion was that what you describe as a japanese preference was an American thing, and for the most part in the loudspeakers, American made loudspeakers had lotsa bass and treble and weak midtone.

My opinion is that the japanese manufacturers deliberately muffled the midtone back in the old days, to make an illusion of clear sound. It is very easy even for an inexperienced ear to hear distortion in midtone, by reducing midtone they would appear clearer. But i want to add that it does not apply to all japanese brands, for example Yamaha had a ok midtone, clean and simple amps with less fancy functions and settings.

You sound like an unbiased and objective person, so could you test the display for us? Just a few words on color reproduction at low and high brightness settings, especially i am interested in color white, does it appear blue or green or yellow this time, on low/mid brightness, and how much does it change when set to max brightness?

This device is superb, the vivid display has to be seen to be believed, it is a lot brighter than that in Galaxy S III too, and similar bar the resolution. Web browsing is almost instant, no support for flash though. Camera, despite criticism ;seem very good to me, even in low light levels. Audio, loud both through ear phones and speaker, a lot lot better than the motoluxe junk speaker. What strikes you too is that the screen is close to the surface of gorilla glass, fantastic. No radio, or hdmi out, but has nfc.....not sure if I would use it though. The pentile matrix is a little obvious, but worth the sacrifice for such a good screen. Highly recommended this device.

Working as an audio enginer way back in the 70s, I first detected this trend, as all the japanese products were mainly set to output maximum bass, little mid and a lot of treble. The British liked full-range o/p with little-to-no equalization. Has this changed? Just an observation.

The Audio quality is not a problem guys.

Look at the input impedance of the test amplifier GSMArena uses, 20,000 ohm. The Razr i obviously dont like high impedance for some reason that i am not qualified to speculate in. Headphones are like 16 ohm and so on, i think my Sony Studio monitor in-ear headset has 63 ohm, thats pretty high already, but much less than 20,000.

So at a normal input impedance the THD is 0.117, thats bad, right? But can you hear it? No. For a pure sinus tone a human ear can usually detect distortion at 0.1%, vagely, but we dont sit down and play Sinus tones do we. Some us may have those MP3 with various frequencies sinus test tones (i used to have them) but its music we listen to, and then we need 1% THD before we can notice it at all.

Your headset itself, regardless of what the manufacturer tells you in the spec sheet, generates more distortion than the RAZR i, so this is no disaster at all. Sure some of us (me included) can notice THD and other stuff slightly better than others but not by much, those who can notice it considerably better are already too busy traveling around the world giving violin concerts to worry about the THD of Razr i.

Furthermore, i have noticed that those who scream loudest about Audio Quality on cellfones are also those who are loudest about graphic equalizers. Too many times have i met people who claim to love quality sound who have adjusted their car or home stereo to a too low midtone, lotsa bass and too much treble. Its my experience that people who cannot appreciate strong midtone dont have a clue anyway and its wasted to discuss audio with them.

Sorry Moto, but unless Intel are releasing an ARM compatible chip then I'm not putting up with the software incompatibilities.

Please re-release, RAZR M in Europe with ARM, non-pentile, better camera and QWERTY and my money is all yours.

Remember that the ppi of this pentile display is only 160 for red and blue, and a still low 216 for green. Bring up a webpage with small fonts in portrait mode. I did and compared 2 phones which both have 854x480, s Nokia N9 amoled 3.9, and Xperia Pro 3.7 inch. Despite the smaller display of the xperia we were able to read smaller fonts. And the fonts of the N9 looked ugly and bent out of shape. For video photo and big text the N9 look very good, like pentile amoled often do, but for small fonts they are ugly. Put your maxx beside another qHD like Xperia P and see what i mean. For 4.3 inch i want HD 720, like on Acro S. I might pick up just an acro S next week, if the price is right, ain't buying any non-HD so close to 2013.

and over at expert reviews 5/5

'The Motorola RAZR i stands up well to similarly-priced handsets, such as the HTC One S, both SIM-free and on a £25 monthly contract. It’s incredibly fast at browsing the web, has a decent camera and is remarkably compact. It’s tough and practical, with both its micro SD card slot and dedicated camera button. Its Android installation has a few niggles, but these are easily outweighed by some great design decisions. It’s not the most exciting phone, but it’s a very good one.'
