Samsung now developing 11K mobile display, to be ready in 2018

Kaloyan, 13 July, 2015

Today many people are still considering the Quad HD displays a result of a useless numbers race sacrificing processing power for little real life benefit. But Samsung is already looking way past that and is going after the next major step.

Apparently Samsung partnered with 13 companies and the South Korean government to develop an 11K mobile display with unthinkable 2250ppi density. The Korean Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning has already agreed to invest $26.5 million into the R&D of this new 11K display.

What's the point of this, right? Well, the 2250ppi density will allow the screen to produce VR experiences without pixelization.

The 11K display is being developed as Project EnDK. All parties are hoping the prototypes to be ready in time for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.

According to the Executive Director of Samsung Display, this might look like "over specification", but the breakthrough would help the Korean industry in the future.

Why not develop 16K directly? Although this could be a good move for Samsung - to skip a display (8K) of what could be a generation-long to get standardized just to get ahead in the display department. And all else would follow
