Week 31 in review: iPhone 6, Xperia Z3 Compact, Nokia X2

03 August, 2014

The Week In Review is our series meant to recap all the major announcements of the week, which you might have missed. Week 31 of 2014 saw a lot of rumors and interesting leaks, as well as speculation whether the Nokia X2 will live or not.

Unsurprisingly, the accent of this week is the iPhone 6 and its rumored two versions. According to some of the latest rumors, Apple will ship a 5.5" and a 4.7" iPhone 6 models, but only the larger one will pack a sapphire display.

The reason for the lack of sapphire display on the iPhone 6 is that the suppliers of the components related to the screen haven't started shipping their products yet. This ma makes it impossible for the iPhone 6 to be assembled with a sapphire display for its September launch.

Interestingly enough, the Kyocera Brigadier for Verizon beat the iPhone 6 to market sporting a sapphire display.

Moving over to Apple's main rival in the industry - Samsung. This week wasn't the best for the company, as a Galaxy S4 owner was burnt while his phone was charging. Samsung neglected the situation as it offered the man to ship the damaged phone back and get a new one in return. However, he never did.

HTC spotted the opportunity to step in and fix the situation and offered the man a brand new One M8. He accepted it and when eventually his new Samsung Galaxy S4 came in, he sold it and gave the money to charity.

In more Samsung news, a company's VP shared that the phonemaker is planning two new flagship smartphones in the next six months. While this isn't strictly breaking news, he shared the news after Samsung reported a weak (by its standards) Q2 review.

One of the phones would feature "new materials", while the other will come with a large display. These are the Galaxy Alpha, rumored to launch in a week or so, while the other is the Galaxy Note 4 with its 5.7" display.

In spite of Microsoft terminating Nokia's Android program, the company has released the Nokia X2 in Russia and Pakistan. There, the phone costs between €115 and €125, respectively.

This week, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact made a splash with a bunch of newly leaked photos.

The Xperia Z3 Compact is said to have a 4.6" 1080p screen with extremely thin bezels. On the inside the upcoming mini king is as impressive as the Xperia Z1 Compact and will feature a Snapdragon 801 chipset and 3GB RAM.

Finally, more photos of the next Gionee smartphone appeared. The phone carries the model number GN9005, the phone is said to be just 5mm thin. If true, the 4.8" smartphone with a 720p AMOLED screen is set to be the next slimmest smartphone in existence.

The rest of the phone's specs include a quad-core 1.2GHz processor (presumably Cortex-A7) with 1GB RAM. Despite its thin waistline, the phone is rumored to pack a respectable 2050mAh battery.

Have you seen Lenovo P780? That phone pack with 4000mAh battery inside its 10mm thick body. Although it's not so slim as LG G2 or S5 but it is good enough to hold and didn't create big bulge in your pocket. Trust me I own it.
