It might be that there is no reception in the area where you live, go back to the shop and check with them there.

I just bought this phone today from T-mobile for 69.95 eur including a 512 mini SD card, card reader, sim cart, data cable and headphones. It was a real bargain. Ohhh and a free home delivery.
From my expereicne so far with the phone I can tell that it is the best. it doens't have any crazy features - only the basic ones although it misses MMS and GPRS. But despite this lack, the memory card and the MP3 player make up everything.
This sync with the computer is a piece of cake - just copy the songs to the mp3 folder of the phone. No extra software instalation!!!!
One major flaw of the software is the fact that you cannot put an mp3 as a ringtone - you are stuck with the ones that came preinstaled on the phone (both midi and mp3) but you can't put yourown mp3 as a ringtone.
The ringtone library as well as the wallpaper library as preety good - there are cool wallpapers and ringtones for every occasion.
The phone can also ring and vibrate at the same time (something that my samsung x300 counldn't do) which is nice to have.
Also the feel in the hand is very good. I can't coment of battery life so far as it is the first day that I am using this phone but from what i saw until know, with 2 hours of mp3 music listening the battery hasn't even declined a bit. Also you can charge the phone through the usb cable as well as the travel charger included in the package.
Overal a good phone for everybody on a budget that doesn't need or can live without MMS and GPRS. Small in size and weight.

I'm glad some people agree with me! Thankyou, and of course your both right, there is always going to be a market for high-end phones but for someone like me who rarely uses feautures like bluetooth and wifi i think that alcatel are perfect, i currently own a motorola L6 but am considering going for an E801 (theres a very nice looking one in white at the moment). some would say this is down-grading but really after trying a lot of Phones with 10mb memory and bluetooth all i seem to want is the extra memory to play my MP3's on. once again thankyou to Don and Knight-rider especially for baking me up on this one. :)

I agreed with marcus, value products are important..but more high end products open out a bigger market for T&A. Or else the name Alcatel would forever be associated with cheap&cheerful. I remembered the time i had the OT-701, really stonking tour-de-force phone. That time Alcatel still known to produce advanced phones. Now i hope they launch the new generation quickly..like the OT-S860 and OT-C850

Sadly no - I've tried to set up my MP3's as ringtones - but there just doesn't seem to be the option for it :( There are some mp3 files in the ringtones menu, but unfortunately you are stuck with those

                          - as I said earlier the phone and the mp3 player are two very seperate things - but if anyone knows different I would love to hear about it

And that "high end" or to put it in better words, more luxurious class is adressed by the S853, S860 and soon to be launched successor models (presentation some time next year if all goes well).

Marcus: I agree with you totally, the world went nuts on HiFi WiFi 10 megapixel Bluethooth hack and smack type of gizmo's, now people be plain and simply honest for once... where do you find a phone looking this nice, being this robust and solid and has an EXCELLENT MP3 player with memory card and headset for 69 Euro's including phone number and ofcourse not to forget, the übercool red keylights! I agree Marcus!! But ofcourse high end phones are important too... but be honest... how often do you use the WiFi, the filesharing, video conversations...??? The normal phone user (US the normal customer), I can safely say almost never uses those features on a daily or even weekly bases... however, it would not hurt to have 1 real good real nice high end phone in the line up.

Hello, everyone, i have noticed recently when looking to view a lot of alcatel products (as i am looking for a cheap new phone) that a lot of you have commented quite rudely on the lack of feautures that many alcatel phones have to offer, funnily enough there is a reason for this, as you may have noticed - before alcatel were bought by T&A alcatel work very hard to ensure that they were competing with other brands on the technoligy front, now T&A have clearly decided to cut down on a lot of feautures to provide us with stylish, VALUE products Value being the keyword; in order to deliver the most value that can be given for a mobile of this type. i'm sorry if i sound nerdy or generally annoying for pointing this out but i thought the comment had to be made.

You mean it has no simlock? Lucky you! Seems you have one of the very first production phones, they often still use the information used in Beta versions of the phones, and those are usually simlock free! Again lucky you! Have fun with it ;-).
