Amazon's Fire Phone is now available for $199.99

25 July, 2014

The Amazon Fire Phone is now available for purchase, either from the retailer itself or from AT&T.

The price you have to pay is $199.99 if you want to get it through a classic two-year contract arrangement with the carrier.

Though if that doesn't suit your taste, you can also go the AT&T Next route, whereby you pay nothing for the handset upfront, but then get monthly installments.

On AT&T Next 18, you'll need to make 24 monthly payments of $27.09. Next 12 lets you pay in 20 monthly parts, of $32.50 each.

The Fire Phone was announced last month as Amazon's entry into the smartphone space, and it comes with a few interesting features as well as some caveats. To get the latter out of the way first - the design isn't anything special, and neither are its specs. And despite what Amazon's been doing with its line of Kindle tablets, the Fire Phone isn't affordable either.

On the other hand, it does come with five front-facing cameras, four of which are used to power its Dynamic Perspective feature, which changes how you see things on the screen depending on how you're looking at it.

And it's also got Firefly, an advanced OCR system that is supposed to identify everyday objects and let you purchase them from Amazon.

Finally, let's not forget that by buying the Fire Phone you're getting a year of Amazon Prime for free.
