There ae two types of ipad, one is wifi only where you cannot use sim card and thus cannot use as a phone.
Second type is wifi plus cellular . with this you can use as a phone by using nono sim.

hi, iwant to ask if the ipad mini 4g can work as mobile phone or not.
I wanna buy one yesterday and the seller tell me that not can work as mobile phone but work only through internet and I can make call only through viber or something else...That i want to ask about because if it is available in other region i tell some friend to keep it.I notice that I am from Egypt(alexandria)...

i have iphone 4, ipad 2, macbook pro , macbook air , ipod because i like apple product so much. when apple lunch ipad mini i ery interested but when i know i pad mini cannot use as a telephone and gps, i not so happy about this model. why apple not do it same as samsung, galaxy tab 7.0, 7.7, 10.1 can use as a celular phone. so i advise apple produce i pad mini can use as a celular telephone. its not practical you have one iphone + one ipad mini ini your pocket at one time. but if you have one ipad mini(use as telphone) with one macbook pro or macbook air its very complete instrument for do evrything in office or out door ofice activity. so please thing seriusly about that. tq

Every time you try to post this missing feature on apple forums, you get bashed by fanboys.
But i am one of the few customers that agrees with you! Since there is already cellular data.. why not go the extra mile of adding phone features?! Phone feature > retina display IMO.

i'm assuming you have prepaid nano-sim, just give the number to your carrier's reloader and local charges shall be applied. atleast in my country, philippines, our carrier has an app to reload and check balances on ipad/ipad mini. hope this helps.

Why cant Apple put a phone feature in the IPad mini instead of coming out with 3 new phones?! It sucks having to carry around to devices because Apple wont fill the needs of customers!

However first gen iPad 3g has this hardware.. and gsm call can be enabled if jailbreak and use app "phoneitipad" You can go try at your own risk thou :D

Can you use this as a phone if you jail brake it as I really want a bigger phone like a Samsung note 2 but I don't want to have to change to android as I love apples iOS but my iPhone is too small although I do think a ipad mini is a bit big for a phone I would rather it be to big then to small why can't Appel make a iPhone xl now that would be a great phone anyone help thanks :)
