Ios 16 really bogged down X and XS, and I don't think iOS 17 is gonna make any positive difference to XS. You can watch the battery percentage drop in minutes on X running 16.

Since iOS 17 won't be coming to this phone, all that's left is security patches.

Best phone, if it supported iOS 17 it would be rlly good and this phones has a gorgeous design with telephoto worth the price. I would still be using this phone if I didn't sell it 4 years ago. it also has a great camera

My opinion:
This phone is still powerful in 2023, however the battery life could be better. I've had this phone since 2020 and it's never broken down on me. I run iOS 15.6 on it. If this thing gets iOS 17 and sideloading, it will be very futureproof and I will likely keep it until it breaks or it becomes slow.
If you are considering leaving this phone, keep it till Apple announces iOS 17. If it is supported, I would keep it for even longer. If it doesn't get 17, consider getting a new phone within the next year, I recommend iPhone 11/11 Pro.
