Apple just released a photo book, showcasing 20 years of design

While not the last thing you would expect to see on Cupertino ground, a traditional hardbound book is definitely an extraordinary item. In fact, Apple is pricing its new paper product, in a way definitely fitting a work of art, or rare collectible. The latter is what the company is likely going for and understandably so, since few Apple fans would turn down the exquisitely-crafted piece of memorabilia.

The book itself a photo album, featureing a total of 240 full-page photographs of Apple products by Andrew Zuckerman. The content traces Apple design from the iMac in 1998 to the Apple Pencil in 2015. It offers a glimpse into the design process, as well as finished products across the iPhone, iPod, Mac, Apple Watch and other products in the company's device family. Apple SVP Design Jony Ive, refers to the book, titled simply "Designed by Apple in California", as an archive of work:

This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.

The piece is actually an Apple product end to end. It took eight years to prepare, is dedicated to the late Steve Jobs and is published by the company itself, not a third-party. And if that isn't enough to explain the exuberant pricing, the presentation definitely does.

Designed by Apple in California

The book is printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with silver edges. As already mentioned, it comes in two sizes - 10.20 inch by 12.75 inch and 13 inch by 16.25 inch edition. They are priced at $199 and $299, respectively and will be available for online purchase starting tomorrow in the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Some "select" Apple stores will also have the book in stock. If you happen to live near one of said brick and mortar locations, you can also go in and check it out in person.
