Best phone of 2019: Vote for the best midrangers

Yordan, 22 December 2019

The preliminary stage of our public vote for the best phones of 2019 got intriguing, but in the end, five phones from the three main categories emerged. With nearly 70,000 votes across three categories for almost 60 phones, you picked those to compete in the final round.

Midrangers

The battle between Xiaomi and Samsung gets heated in this category. The Redmi Note 8 family has two representatives - the Redmi Note 8 Pro boasts a larger display with HDR and a significant boost in performance (it's the first phone powered by the Helio G90T chipset). Also, it upgrades the main camera on the back to 64MP and bumps the battery capacity slightly.

The vanilla Redmi Note 8 has a 48MP main cam along with the same 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro cameras. Also, its battery capacity is "only" 4,000mAh, but that's enough to score an Endurance rating of 108 hours.

The Realme 5 Pro also comes with a 48MP main and 8MP ultrawide cameras, 2MP macro cam as well. However, it has a Snapdragon 712 chipset, which is newer and more powerful than the 665 inside the Redmi above. It is the more expensive phone of the two, though, which works against it.

Like the Redmis, the Samsung Galaxy A50 and A70 represent a base and upgraded version of pretty much the same phone. The Galaxy A50 is more compact with a 6.4" Super AMOLED screen and 4,000mAh battery, compared to the 6.7" and 4,500mAh of the A70. And in some regions it's a good deal cheaper than its bigger sibling.

The Galaxy A70 upgrades the main camera on the back and the selfie camera with 32MP sensors (up from 25MP on its sibling). This and the switch to a Snapdragon 675 chipset enabled 2160p video recording. Also of note is the faster wired charging, 25W vs. 15W.

But where is the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite? Almost the same price as Redmi Note 8 Pro but feels like a flagship.

My vote: Redmi Note 8 Pro, that Helio G90T is superfast and best for the budget seekers.
