you can download the software without BIS service.But remember for social networking(facebook,twitter),messaging and email you need to take BIS service or you can run it on WIFI.
Messenger does not run on wifi for so should have to have BIS service.
BIS plans starting from 400pm in india so check it out your pocket before purchasing BB. In my opinion speed of internet browsing and email are not fast as compare to android and iphone and you have to reboot each time when u download the software... thanks

Nice phone wid great bttry bck up. ,os 7.1 performs well and have no prblms of hanging and freezing etc. But at this price point there is no 3g ? ? ? This is the mst dissappointmnt thing :-( . .but i have a se elm far bettr then 9220. .bettr camera ,gud 3g ,nice looks ,bettr wi fi and display and far bettr music player:-) i lv u sony:-)

got this baby yesterday... nice n easy... fast wifi, good refresh rate, faster response, better than 8520. Battery life is the best, good speaker phone, nice n clear voice..only disadvtg is the blackberry internet services which is a must to browse(mandatory for all blackberry devices, expensive internet services by the ISPs)... u can't really expect 3G services for this price, clear FM radio. Overall 8.5/10
