Canalys: Chinese brands challenge Samsung in Africa

Ro, 15 May 2018

A quarterly report from Canalys shows pretty strong Samsung position in African smartphone market and a huge 42% growth in year-over-year but Chinese brands under the Transsion umbrella take a big market share as well in Q1 2018.

Collectively, Tecno, iTel and Infinix, which are all sub-brands of Transsion Holdings, overtake Samsung with 38% market share in Q1 2018,compared to the 23% slice for the Korean giant.

Anyway, from the top 5 list we see another familiar Chinese brand - Huawei. It seems that its performance in Q1 this year is pretty much on par with the first quarter of 2017 - just a small 3% decrease in sales but still holds a respectable 7% of the market share.

The entire continent of Africa bought less phone than a single developed country

Huawei is still great on the midrange game! Xiaomi is the no. 1 in the midrange level, and Samsung is pricing their phones very high!

You mean Xiaomi only right? Because Huawei prices are catching up or right up there with Samsung's already.
