HMD Global shipped 2 million Nokia smartphones in the January-March period. That is up year on year (was 1.7 million in Q1 2020), but down from the previous quarter when the number of shipments reached 2.8 million, reports NokiaMob quoting data by Counterpoint Research.

What went wrong and what went right? Nokia smartphones lost ground in India, they were down 38.5% from Q4 last year and down 17% from Q1 last year. Nokias are doing well in Africa and parts of Europe, which helped boost shipments compared to the October-December quarter.

Smartphones aside, HMD shipped 11 million feature phones in Q1. The numbers here follow a similar pattern – up from the year-ago quarter, down from the previous quarter. HMD remains the third largest feature phone maker in the world.

On the global scale, the Nokia brand fell out of the Top 10 and is now 11th. This is counting both kinds of phones, looking at just smartphones the brand fell one place to 18th.

I love Nokia as a brand. HMD ruined Nokia's legacy. Please stop making Nokia phones, you ruined everything. I love Nokia. I hate HMD.
