DeepSeek app will be banned in the US, predicts Arm CEO

DeepSeek is the latest hot name in AI, with Huawei, Honor, Microsoft and even some auto makers already using the R1 model in its products and services. The Chinese-made platform quickly gained popularity in the United States, achieving the top position in the App Store almost overnight.

Arm CEO Rene Haas shared his concerns about the service's future with Financial Times, stating it may be forced to shut down “due to foreign policy" implications stemming from its status as a Chinese company.

Haas noted that his forecast reflects the developments of recent weeks regarding TikTok. The social media platform, owned by ByteDance and originating from China, faces the possibility of a split in its US operations or potentially being shut down despite the ban being delayed.

DeepSeek does not have American operations and utilizes the DeepSeek R1 open-source AI model for its app and web service. Consequently, while access to the service may be restricted, users can still download and operate the language model on their own devices.
