Early photo samples showcase the Nokia 7 camera performance

Victor, 21 October 2017

A couple of days ago, without too much fuss, HMD Global officially unveiled the latest member of the revived Nokia family - then Nokia 7. Combining a premium bill of materials (7000 series aluminum, vacuum molded 3D Corning Gorilla Glass construction) and a solid specs sheet (5.2" 1080p LCD, Snapdragon 630, 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage), the handset is clearly aimed an the upper-midrange segment.

Making it in this particular highly competitive niche is no easy task and many place high hopes on the 16MP, f/1.8, 1.12um pixels, dual-tome LED camera setup to really deliver big in the quality department. A set of photos popped up online today, allegedly captured on the brand new Nokia 7. Unfortunately, these have been compressed all the way down to 640 x 480, with only a couple published with a somewhat higher resolution.

This does severely limit our ability to accurately judge the level of detail in the stills. Never the less, even sized down, the samples look pretty impressive. Colors appear nice and natural, sharpness seems consistent across the frame. Sadly, there are no actual low-light shots to examine. The one with the bouquet does appear dimly lit and indeed shows quite a bit more noise.

Still, even with HDM's lofty PR promises of a great "Zeiss imaging experience", we can't realistically ask remarkably better low-light behaviour out of a mid-ranger with a single camera setup. It might not be flagship-grade, but it still looks good enough. The Nokia 7 will be available in China on October 24 for CNY 2,499 (that's around $377 or €320) with 4GB of RAM, and CNY 2,699 ($407 or €345) with 6GB. At the moment we have no information about when (or if) the Nokia 7 will be sold in other countries.

DOA? They said that to the Nokia 6 and Nokia 6 still fly off the shelves like hot crispy parathas.. This Nokia 7 has a better 16MP than Nokia 6 coupled with zeiss lens so its image quality is going to be better than Nokia 8.. A definite buy for sure

Yes it does, take huawei as example. In single color image mode, they use both sensor, one RGB, one monochrome so that contrast and details will be higher. Honor 8 Pro takes great photos in low light even without OIS, maybe the best low light picture...
