Six-year-old Fairphone 2 is getting Android 10

Dutch phone maker Fairphone has announced it's updating its six-year-old Fairphone 2 with Android 10. Fairphone has already kicked off Android 10 beta testing and aims to release the final build in early 2022.

The Fairphone 2 was announced in 2015 with Android 5.1 Lollipop and later picked up Android 6 Marshmallow, Android 7.1 Nougat, and Android 9 Pie updates. And once the final build of Android 10 is released, the Fairphone 2 will be the first Android smartphone to receive seven years of software updates, which is pretty impressive even though Android 10 is two years old since Apple is the only company that comes close to that kind of software support.

Fairphone said it worked with Indian software developer Bharath Ravi Prakash for the Fairphone 2's Android 10 update and completed the development in 10 months - that's eight months less than the time it took for the Android 9 update.

Fairphone also has good news for the Fairphone 3 and 3+ users as the company said it will kick off Android 11 beta testing for the two smartphones this week.

The Fairphone 3 and 3+ were introduced in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The former came with Android 9 Pie out of the box, while the latter boots Android 10. You can read our Fairphone 3+ hands-on review here to learn more about it or watch the video below about its key features.

Couldn't agree more. Less e-waste is always more than welcome. I'd rather have one device that can do everything instead of having multiple devices that can only do one job.

To be honest, I also switched back from wireless to wired headphones. It‘s nice and all but regularly charging is less convenient as well and together with the e-waste and massive cost, I guess it evens out and I don‘t have racks so I opt for the che...

That is a real shame since their latest 4 is a massive upgrade over both 3+ and 3. I don't embrace wireless audio anymore because it only creates more e-waste with little benefit.
