Gingerbread for Galaxy S coming in March, Froyo for Galaxy 3 and 5

09 March, 2011

Samsung Mobile Romania posted on their Facebook page that the I9000 Galaxy S will be getting Gingerbread (after a quick v2.2.1 update), while the I5500 Galaxy 5 and I5800 Galaxy 3 will be served Froyo soon.

This move will sure earn Samsung some brownie points - the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S may be getting replaced soon, but it's a best seller in the pockets of millions. For the record it's getting a second major OS update (it started on v2.1 Eclair).

The Samsung Galaxy S will first get a minor update to v2.2.1 by 20 March followed by the v2.3 Gingerbread update by the end of the month. The update should come not long after the Gingerbread update for Google's own Nexus One.

If you can't wait that long, the Galaxy S Gingerbread update leaked last week and we took it for a spin. Our benchmarks showed improved performance even with this early version of the software.

The Samsung I5500 Galaxy 5 and Samsung I5800 Galaxy 3 are both previous generation mid-rangers so hopes for an upgrade weren't very high. But the two will be getting updated - Samsung Mobile Romania says that the I5500 Galaxy 5 should expect the update next week (14-20 March) and the I5800 Galaxy 3 will have to wait until the end of the month.

Samsung Mobile's global Facebook page is mum on update details, so the timing is probably region-specific.
