Google starts eSIM program for phone makers

Enrique, 03 December 2018

Google is moving forward with the eSIM technology that it embedded into the Pixel 2 (XL) and Pixel 3 (XL). eSIM is arguably a convenient solution for consumers “fumbling around to try to place [a nanoSIM] into a small slot”. But until the most recent security update, Pixel 3 support for eSIM is limited to one carrier in the US – Google Fi.

Google is expanding the Pixel 3’s eSIM support to a few new countries and carriers with the latest December security patch. Google did also briefly mention in a blog post that it would begin a program for Android phone makers to use eSIM more easily and sets a standard across Android phones early on, which is great.

To enable a consistent and simple experience across the ecosystem, we’re also creating a program that allows Android device makers to build eSIM-capable smartphones.

Now that Apple has eSIM in the latest iPhones (XR, XS, and XS Max), we speculate that the transition to phase out SIM cards is in its infancy, but also represents the direction that the market is taking, especially with phone makers taking advantage of saving as much internal space as possible.

What do you think about the eSIM? Would you eventually like to see it replace the nano SIM or do you prefer to manually install a SIM between your devices? It has to potential to either simplify or complicate those who like to buy local data when traveling internationally.
