Google is retiring older versions of many Google mobile apps on April 3

Google's default application suite is currently the centerpiece of productivity tasks on many mobile devices, both Android and iOS. Apparently, the web giant has reached some kind of major cut-off point in the development of many of its apps and is now planning to retire and stop supporting older versions.

The switch will be flipped on April 3 and will affect the following application version on Android and iOS, respectively:

• Google Drive for Android (prior to version 2.4.311)
• Google Docs for Android (prior to version 1.6.292)
• Google Sheets for Android (prior to version 1.6.292)
• Google Slides for Android (prior to version 1.6.292)

• Google Drive for iOS (prior to version 4.16)
• Google Docs for iOS (prior to version 1.2016.12204)
• Google Sheets for iOS (prior to version 1.2016.12208)
• Google Slides for iOS (prior to version 1.2016.12203)

Users stuck on any of the versions getting the boot will start receiving update prompts after March 1. The most natural solution would, of course, be to update the apps. However, many of the legacy users, especially on Android devices likely have a very good reason to be stuck on a given version. It could be a hardware issue, but also a case of not necessarily using an official, complete or current version of Google Play Services and consequently, some of the Google apps built on top.

This does make us wonder how the change will potentially effect anybody using a third-party Play Services solution or modded Google apps. Consider this a heads-up for all you tinkerers and modders out there.
