Google Play sees over 28 billion app downloads in Q3, outpaces App Store 3 to 1

Smartphone usage has grown by a quarter in the July -September period compared to the same time last year. In the same period, app downloads have seen an even larger increase with Google Play reaching 28.3 billion total downloads for the Q3 period. This is a 31% increase compared to last year and gives Google a 3 to 1 advantage in total downloads compared to Apple’s App Store which managed 8.2 billion total downloads.

A whopping 80.6 billion apps were downloaded on Google Play since the start of the year while the App Store saw 26.6 billion combined downloads through three quarters.

According to the same report, Google Play also boasts the largest app portfolio with over 2.7 million total apps, ahead of the App Store’s 1.82 million offerings. The most downloaded category of apps on the Play Store belongs to the gaming sector with 13.49%, followed by education with 9.11% and business with 6.95% of all downloads.

Fortnite can be easily sideloaded. It's Android. Plus you have to add around 0.5 million apps to the catalogue as they aren't available on playstore but are available on other Android marketplaces.
