Google Wallet update starts rolling out to Android users
During Google I/O, plans were announced to add support to its digital wallet app for not only Digital IDs and car keys, but also digital office and hotel keys. It would also come with a “rebranding” that doesn’t change the name of the payment service itself, “Google Pay” is still around and the name of the payment service. The change is to the name of the app, which is now Google Wallet.
This change is reflected with the latest confirmation from a Google representative who confirmed to The Verge that Google “started rolling out the Wallet to Android users in 39 countries,” and is expected to reach all Google Pay users over the coming days.
The new Wallet app will come as an update to the current Google Pay app in most countries where Google Pay is available. Meanwhile, Android users in the US and Singapore will keep both GPay and Wallet apps since the former is used for person-to-person payments and money-management tools are offered in these markets. Users in India won’t see any chance – the app will remain as Google Pay.
