Honor 8X review

Display

The Honor 8X features a 6.5" IPS LCD screen with 1,080 x 2,340 pixels - this makes for a pretty sharp picture with 396ppi density. The aspect ratio is quite tall, or wide, depending how you look at it - 19.5:9.

A Gorilla Glass 3 by Corning is shielding the screen from cracks.

The Honor 8X has nicely deep blacks and a good maximum brightness of 430 nits. The screen isn't the brightest we've seen around, sure, but it does a solid job for the class. The contrast ratio is very good at 1:1234.

We measured a minimum brightness level of 2.4 nits.

Sunlight legibility is nothing worth praising, although the score is still fine for a budget phone. In real-world terms, the handset remains usable outdoors. Just don't angle the sun straight at it.

Now let's talk about color accuracy. Having so many different screen modes is probably confusing, so we'd try to keep it short.

The Honor 8X is set at Vivid (mode) + Default (color temp) out of the box. We measured an average deltaE of 7.5 and maximum deviation of 12 at point white (leans toward blue). There is noticeable blue tint on the screen no matter what you are looking at.

But if you are all about color accuracy - then just pick Normal (mode) + Warm (color temp). With an average deltaE of 3.7 and a maximum deviation of 9 at point blue - the Honor 8X will offer you reasonably accurate colors. The display may look a bit duller if you are coming from a punchy screen, but it's better to have that option for a more accurate color rendition even if it's not always on.

Battery life

The Honor 8X is powered by a large 3,750 mAh battery. It supports a standard 10W (5V/2A) charging and the supplied charger fills 29% of a depleted battery in half an hour.

The Honor 8X posted excellent scores in our battery test. North of 12 hours of looping videos and eleven-and-a-half hours of browsing the web over Wi-Fi are plenty and a day and a half of voice calls on a 3G network isn't too shabby either. Add to that the reasonably efficient standby performance and you get a 96h Endurance rating.

Our endurance rating denotes how long a single battery charge will last you if you use the Honor 8X for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. We've established this usage pattern, so our battery results are comparable across devices in the most common day-to-day tasks. Speaker

There is one speaker on the Honor 8X, and it's at the bottom. It scored a Very Good mark in our loudness test. The sound quality is okayish - but definitely not among the best we've encountered lately. The sound is a bit shallow and not very rich but it will do fine for the occasional music playback session.

Audio quality

The Honor 8X did splendidly with an active external amplifier, delivering nicely loud output with perfect accuracy. That got our hopes high, but what followed left us somewhat disappointed.

Headphones dropped the volume to below average, while introducing some shakiness to the frequency response and a moderate amount of intermodulation distortion. Add the above average increase in stereo crosstalk and you get a rather mediocre showing in the second part of the test.
