Anonymous, 28 Nov 2022IP ratings are basically another layer of 'quality con... moreMan nowdays company A act as company B tons of exceptions can be said
but it will take too long but few of that i can point.
Example 1:
https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_australia_fined_aud_14m_over_misleading_water_resistance_ads-news-54782.php
Example 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF72hGIdrG8
Apple most expensive watch with so called real shapphire and mohs pick of 6 made scratches.
Also i dont believe they can survive unharmed as deep as 100 metres.
Garming were the best in that Jerryrigeverything test.
So conclusion or in other words. As long as cheaper phone last as long as your warranty where you plan to buy new device (for one major reason you dont want to end with great looking but old hardware device unable to run new tricks and apps) a cheaper option is always win win.
Or in other words a Company B which acts as a company A. Old Xiaomi Poco F1, New Xiaomi 12 note explorer.
Oneplus devices of the old times, Nubia red magic etc.

AnonD-731363, 27 Nov 2022man yes and no. IP rating is still gimick. You can have mos... moreIP ratings are basically another layer of 'quality control (QC)' in which the manufacturer tests their product before shipment to make sure that their product is working properly. Every (reputable) company has some sort of QC that makes sure that their SoCs are without error, phones aren't exploding *cough* *cough*, or that their cases don't disintegrate when exposed to dihydrogen monoxide. This part usually remains hidden since it's boring as paint drying but IP ratings are an exception since it provides companies more content for their adverts.
For example:
Company A creates a phone which has amazing QC but is very expensive.
Company B creates the same phone which has minimal QC and sells it for cheap.
People who bought Company A's phone are happy that their phone works perfectly but feel like they got scammed.
People who bought Company B's phone are mostly unhappy and even with replacements, have only had their phones work 1% of the time.
Ideally you'd go somewhere in between; not to high that consumers don't buy it, but not to low so that consumers have broken phones.

lol, 27 Nov 2022Nope. Only those who have too much money but not sure where... moreIf people have enough money to buy a folding phone that costs >1000€, would you consider that those people have too much money and weigh form over function?
Many (but not all) people want the "most stylish" phone since it indicates that they're well off even if it's hot garbage. Buy a cheapo phone from 2016 and slap a knockoff Gucci case on it and BAM! You've got the hottest phone around and many hot singles nearby suddenly want to meet you!
Also, I don't get the argument. My original statement says that "a lot" of people want the form over function thing but you say that rich people (implying only a handful of people) & fanboys only want form over function but then say that 80% (which is "a lot") of the smartphone populace buy a expensive phone for the sake of being 'well off' which is another way of saying 'form over function' in your context. Are you agreeing or disagreeing with me?

Sad, 27 Nov 2022Sadly but true. Anyway i also find it dumb to add a case to... moreMan i dont get it.
I dont get how its dumb to have case for such expensive phone as this.
More expensive the phone more i would like to protect it from any kind of harm.
Thats my opinion.
Rest been told.
I only wonder why manudfacturers push so much fragile folding phones with even more fragile foldng screens where you cant protect the inner screen by anything and when it breaks cost 700-1500 to repair.
Since all had bar phones noone complains.
Since all had notchless phones noone complain.
Since all had jack, sd card slot and charging brick along with earphones in box noone complain.
Nowdays many devices exclude many things from past and cost as much as 3-5 times compared to midrangers and flagships from 10 years ago.
We all complain but we all used to wawe hand over it since noone of us could do anything with it.
Its a shame we are just meatgrinders for phone manufactuers and out feelings and expressions are not taken seriously.
Those brands makes things which makes profit but exclude everything they could to save as much as possible. And we allowed them to do that.
Promises are promised but bread is always eaten.

Anonymous, 27 Nov 2022I mean, phones that come with IP ratings are much less like... moreNope. Only those who have too much money but not sure where to spend or iPhone/Samsung hardcores (aka 'knights' in Flossy Carter's context) will be more concerned on the cosmetics over usage/functionality.
Thus 80% of the worlds' Smart device users are not maximizing 90% of their devices capabilities and switching whenever a new 'better' one appears (like iPhone) and make themselves poor cos of this illogical mindset, just to keep the trend of showing they are 'well off'.

AnonD-731363, 24 Nov 2022IP rating????
Why.
Its just costly useless gimmick.
An... moreSadly but true. Anyway i also find it dumb to add a case to this kinda phone.
Then again, if there IS genuine IP rating for it, the base cost to get the phone surely jump and that would leads to:
- if getting this is worth the price paid.
- durability and or rate of usage (esp on the bigger screen end).
Cos Asian mindset is every dime has to make its worth, and so far all (except Samsung's) fold phones are getting more n more innovative or competitively better, the cost price question is a genuine issue here, esp with recession/depression looming ahead.

Anonymous, 27 Nov 2022I mean, phones that come with IP ratings are much less like... moreman yes and no. IP rating is still gimick. You can have most IP rated phone ot the planet but water is water and can squeeze into your phone when you havent your day and lady luck turns its backs against you.
Noone no company will guarantee you that IP rating will protect your ohone from water.
Its a water right.
Especialy salt water like sea just few secionds of exposing your phone into salt water and is done for.
Rather will have bulky waterproof case than relly on useless gimmick which noone guarantee me it will work when it should work.

AnonD-731363, 26 Nov 2022Speak for yourself, I dont want cases for an already bulky ... moreI mean, phones that come with IP ratings are much less likely to get water damaged than phones w/o IP ratings. Sure it's not ideal but alot of people prefer looks over function so IP ratings are much better than bulky cases for them.
Also you don't need to copy the comment you're replying to since GSMArena automatically adds the og comment in the reply.

Its nickel and dimes for them to get the ip rating, stop excusing companies to cheap out on customers.
Man fine buy an IP rated phone but when it dorwn blaim your self for not buying water proof cover because no company is willing to add water damage into your warranty so when you comes for warranty claims i mean repair you will pay for fixing everything damaged by water which ussualy will be whole phone because corrosion can hit anything since lqwater is liquid which can enter anywhere within your phone.

Reason is very simple.
Less mechanical parts it have better durability can come out i mean less things can break or loose.
And jack was only good for caching moisture anyway.
So its a win win even if its only SD8 gen 1.

Rahul, 23 Nov 2022No IP ratings IP rating????
Why.
Its just costly useless gimmick.
Any waterproof case does a lot better job for much less like 2-5 bucks compared to 20 maybe 50 bucks for IP rating feature.
By the way since no company regardles of brand is not willing to add a water damage into a warranty of the device something such as IP rating should not be taken seriously.
Because nowdays even a low end grade phone can survive few rain drops without any issue,
Rest been said.
Since its a costly gimmick where no manufacturer gives you water damage warranty buying a water proof case or cover is a lot better idea.
End of story.

I'm waiting for a foldable with two hinges. That way the unfolded screen can be closer to 16:9.
Both sides can fold inward thus protecting the foldable display.
