Huawei launches MatePad 10.8 and Enjoy 2 tablets, TalkBand B6 and a kid's smartwatch

This time it’s on purpose – the MatePad 10.8 official, which was spotted yesterday, is now officially official and there’s a surprise, a second tablet. The company also revealed a new talk band and a children’s smartwatch. Let’s have a look.

Huawei MatePad 10.8

The tablet uses a 10.8” IPS LCD with 2,560 x 1,600 px (that works out to 280 ppi pixel density). The display supports the M-Pencil stylus, alternatively you can also attach a keyboard add-on if you prefer to type rather than write.

The Huawei MatePad 10.8 is powered by the flagship Kirin 990 chipset. It’s paired with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB storage by default, but you can upgrade to 128 GB too (or just put a microSD card in the slot). The tablet runs the Android 10-based EMUI 10.1 out of the box.

There are four speakers on the sides, each tuned by Harman Kardon (and backed by Huawei’s Histen 6.1 tech), you can use the 3.5 mm headphone jack as well. The other wired connection is the USB-C port, which tops up the 7,500 mAh battery with no particular haste.

There’s an 8 MP camera on the front of the tablet, plus a 13 MP camera on the back (with an autofocus lens, f/1.8 aperture). The back is available in Champagne Gold and Silver Gray. The tablet weighs around 500 g and measures only 7.2 mm thick.

The MatePad 10.8 will ship in mid-August and is currently available only in a Wi-Fi only flavor (that is Wi-Fi 6+ support). The 6/64 GB option will set you back CNY 2,400 ($340/€290) while the 128 GB storage upgrade is CNY 400 more. There seems to be a 5G version planned as well (some versions of the Kirin 990 have an integrated modem).

Huawei Enjoy Tablet 2

If that’s too much, the Huawei Enjoy Tablet 2 starts at CNY 1,600 ($230/€195) for the 4/64 GB model, the 4/128 GB option is CNY 1,800 (both have a microSD slot). The tablet is more modest specs-wise with a 10.1” 1,920 x 1,200 px screen.

That’s still pretty sharp (224 ppi), really the major downgrade here is the Kirin 710A chipset, which is a mid-range part. It’s built on a 14 nm process and features four each of Cortex-A73 and A53 cores, plus a Mali-G51 MP4 GPU.

Huawei Enjoy Tablet 2

The battery capacity is 5,100 mAh, charged at 10 W. There are only two speakers this time with no brand name attached to them, but the tablet does keep the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Enjoy Tablet 2 will also ship in mid-August, but if you're in China, you can pre-order one today.

Huawei TalkBand B6

The TalkBand B6 is something of a transformer – it’s a wrist-worn smart band, which can pop out of its casing to transform into a Bluetooth earpiece. While on your wrist, it can be housed in a silicone, leather or metal straps.

When worn as a smart band, you’ll be looking at a curved 1.53” AMOLED display with 326 ppi pixel density (188 x 460 px). It will display notifications from an Android (4.4+) or iOS (9.0+) phone. The gadget is IP57 rated, so it’s not afraid of water (especially if you get the silicone band).

Also, there’s an optical heart rate sensor, complete with SpO2 monitoring, plus sleep tracking, so the TalkBand B6 can handle everything you’d expect from a smart band.

The 120 mAh battery should last you 3 days in smart band mode. And it charges over USB-C so no need to fumble with proprietary chargers. As a BT headset, the talk time is up to 8 hours.

The version with a silicone band starts at CNY 1,000 while the fancy metal strap will set you back CNY 1,500.

Huawei Children’s Watch 4X

This chunky and durable smart watch is aimed at the little ones. It’s water resistant up to 5ATM and the whole thing is fairly lightweight at 67.7 g. The 800 mAh battery should last two days of typical use (5 days in power saving mode).

Next to the 1.41” AMOLED display (320 x 360 px) is a 5 MP selfie camera, there’s also an 8 MP camera for general photos.

The watch has NFC with support for Alipay, so it can replace a wallet. It also doubles as a phone, so mom and pop can always check in. The positioning hardware is impressive as the built-in receiver uses GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and QZSS.

The Children’s Watch 4X will be available from August 19 at a price of CNY 1,400.
