HUAWEI U8800 IDEOS X5 Reflashing/Reinstalling Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
FYI only: I posted an inquiry to Huawei Support if it's safe to reflash/reinstall Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread software upgrade. I will share (if and) when I receive their official response. Reflashing/reinstalling 2.3.5 is the only option I can think of that may fix/restore lost Bluetooth/Wi-Fi after upgrading to 2.3.5, else wait and hope Huawei releases another firmware update. My X5 still works fine and I'm sorry I can't be of further help.
"U8800 Software Upgrade Guideline.pdf" states there is no way to go back to factory 2.2.1 but doesn't mention anything about repeating/rerunning the 2.3.5 upgrade if not completely successful on the first attempt. Should be possible, theoretically. I read on some third-party mobile phone forums (though for non-Huawei devices) that some custom apps/modifications took two flash attempts before successfully getting installed. Kindly google for your own peace of mind.
Please understand that there is always the danger of irreparably damaging the phone, and especially for unfortunate users who lost Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, this may introduce more errors and even completely damage their already-broken X5. Last, I have no experience reinstalling 2.3.5 but I hope brave X5 users who tried this will share (actual hands-on experiences only please, even 2.3.5 beta).

Took my phone to a cell phone repair shop to see if they could restore my wifi and Bluetooth. They couldn't because they said the processor was ruined and recommend that I get a new phone. Looks like I'll stick with my BB Torch for awhile longer.

I think those of us having the wifi and bluetooth issues are missing the required kernels from what I've read elsewhere. Now it's a matter of trying to get them back in the firmware and re-installed. I have no idea what to do.

Hi. I'm really liking this phone, it's my first taste of a smart phone. I have to say the camera is a disappointment. I read before Christmas there was an upgrade coming for the camera .... is there? After reading some of the comments on here about issues people are having after upgrading Gingerbread I'm thinking I won't bother ... are there advantages?

HUAWEI U8800 IDEOS X5 Connectivity (After software upgrade from Android 2.2.1 Froyo to 2.3.5 Gingerbread)
I would just like to point out that X5 connectivity options worked for me under 2.3.5 Gingerbread following the upgrade steps I shared last January 5, 2012. I patterned the procedure after official Huawei instructions, and reviewed third-party forum recommendations as well as old YouTube postings from X5 users who shared their upgrade experience using 2.3.5 Gingerbread (beta). I haven't done anything special to my X5 nor have I installed any Android Market application (as those can potentially cause problems). Below are the results of my tests today, Monday, January 16, 2012.
1. Wi-Fi: Successfully connected to secured network (status "Authenticating...", then "Obtaining IP address...", and finally "Connected"), then surfed internet using Browser application (with Mobile network settings > "Data enabled" disabled & "Use only 2G networks" enabled).
2. Bluetooth: Successfully established pairing with Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 in both directions (that is, pair with PC from X5 or pair with X5 from PC). I (temporarily) enabled "Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer" in Windows Control Panel > Bluetooth Devices > Bluetooth Settings > Options, and (temporarily) enabled "Discoverable" and (temporarily) set Discoverable timeout = Never on the X5. Status "Pair with this device", then "Pairing...", and finally "Paired but not connected". Also, I was able to pair and receive ringtones from my old Sony Ericsson W890i. I have no hands-free devices to experiment with though.
3. GPS: Maps & Weather Clock applications showed my location, not quite accurate but close enough (with Location & security settings > "Use wireless networks" & "Use GPS satellites" enabled).
4a. Data Switch: Surfed using Browser with "Data enabled" selected under Mobile network settings using either 2G/3G network (Wi-Fi disabled).
4b. Sharing Phone’s Data Connection via USB (using X5 as USB modem): With "Data enabled" selected under Mobile network settings using either 2G/3G network (Wi-Fi disabled), I simply plugged X5 to PC using USB cable, ignored "Turn on USB storage", enabled "USB tethering" in "Tethering & portable hotspot", selected network Location Type = Public place in Vista, then straightaway surfed using Mozilla Firefox (no need to configure connection settings such as proxies on Firefox). User Guide PDF from www.huaweidevice.com mentions only Windows 7 but works fine on Vista without need to download Microsoft ActiveSync. I did not experiment with Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Other observations/FYI only:
- There are additional options to start over: Bluetooth settings > Bluetooth devices > Press and hold [Bluetooth device] > Unpair, and Wi-Fi settings > Wi-Fi networks > Press and hold [Network] > Forget/Modify network.
- Wireless peer-to-peer doesn't seem to be supported (X5 is unable to detect wireless PC ad hoc network since this does not use a router).
- Huawei File Manager application does not provide an option to send items via Bluetooth "FROM" the X5. This ought to have been available out-of-the-box rather than a separate download from Android Market.
- Under 2.2.1 Froyo I recall that the X5 was inconsistent in detecting incoming Bluetooth files, instances when X5 failed to display notification to accept an incoming (small text) file and I had to request Windows to resend. I have not yet encountered this in 2.3.5 Gingerbread.
- Bluetooth data transfers are reliable so far. I have not yet experienced dropped connections in the middle of a file transfer (unless user-cancelled or moves out-of-range) or corruption in both Froyo & Gingerbread.
- Lastly, X5 can function without a SIM card. However, the 8 GB external MicroSD is disabled (File Manager > SD card > "No memory card." and I did not check if manual mounting is possible), so incoming Bluetooth files are saved to the 2 GB internal SD instead. Still, this was convenient since I have only 1 SIM card at hand allowing me to directly send via Bluetooth the ringtones from my old SE W890i which required a SIM card.
