Huawei's upcoming Mate 8 phablet allegedly leaks in pictures

22 January, 2015

We've already told you that Huawei is planning on dropping the Ascend sub-brand for Android smartphones this year, so you shouldn't be surprised to hear that the successor to the Ascend Mate 7 phablet will be called just Mate 8.

That much makes sense, given the Chinese company's new strategy (though the jump to the number 7 last year, not so much).

Huawei Mate 8

Anyway, the images you can see above have been leaked today, and the source is claiming that they are showing us the Huawei Mate 8 for the first time. However, the shot of the phone's back seems to be identical to a picture that leaked back in December and was then said to portray the upcoming Ascend 7 Plus.

Now obviously Huawei may have changed its mind on the naming scheme in the meantime - these two could be one and the same device, due to eventually be outed as the Mate 8.

As you'd expect, the overall design has stayed close to what we've seen on the Mate 7, though with a much bigger speaker grille on the back. As for specs, we have none to speak of, as they weren't detailed in this leak (and, interestingly, nor in the previous one we talked about).

As with all such leaks, you have hopefully had a well sized grain of salt near you while gazing at the alleged Mate 8. At this point, there's no way to tell if these are real images of the phablet or not, so keep that in mind.
