Instagram adds topic and interest channels to its Explore tab

Lately Instagram has been very active in updating its apps with new features. Not always big, those, but it does seem that something different is coming from the Facebook-owned photo-focused social network every week or so.

This time around we're treated to an improvement to the app's Explore tab (that's the one you get to by tapping the magnifying glass). Starting today, you'll see a new Picked for You section in Explore. This will feature videos that are grouped based on your favorite topics and interests.

The point of this is to make it easier for you to discover videos you'll enjoy, at least that was the thinking behind the feature. Instagram is putting more and more effort into making people use it for videos too, and in the past six months the total time users have spent watching videos on Instagram has grown by 150%, so the strategy is clearly working.

Unfortunately the Picked for You part of the Explore tab is currently only rolling out to Instagram users in the US. The experience should however be coming to the rest of the world soon.
