Instagram quietly discontinues Boomerang and Hyperlapse standalone apps

Enrique, 07 March 2022

Two more of Instagram’s standalone apps have been removed from app stores, as noted by some users on Twitter and reported by Tech Crunch. Both the Boomerang and Hyperlapse apps are no longer available to download from the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store.

Last week, Instagram announced that it was getting ready to discontinue the IGTV app as it shifts its main app’s video strategy. Plus, IGTV had been integrated into the main app years ago.

The Boomerang and Hyperlapse standalone apps were released during times when smartphones had limited performance and the Hyperlapse app, for example, may have offered a better time-lapse recording experience than some handsets of the time. These apps have long been integrated into the main Instagram app by now.

Instagram’s Layout app (used to make photo collages) is still available to download, though this is another feature that’s already built into the app. We imagine Instagram may eventually phase this standalone app out as well.

I understand the need for facebook lite because the full app has so many features but why instagram lite? Even the full instagram seems very light to me.
