iOS 16 adds landscape support to Face ID on "supported iPhone models"

Peter, 07 June 2022

Apple unveiled iOS 16 at yesterday’s WWDC event, which features a major redesign to the Lock screen among other things. One change that wasn’t announced on stage is how you get through the lock screen – Face ID will work in landscape mode on “supported iPhone models”.

It’s not clear what those are right now, it could be as simple as “everything but the SE” or there might be limits that prevent older models with Face ID from gaining support. This will become clear as iOS 16 gets closer to launch.

By the way, landscape mode will work for everything that Face ID is used for, including logging on to sites and approving purchases.

Landscape Face ID is not a new features, some iPads have supported it for years now. But not iPhones, so this is a welcome change nonetheless.

Check out our WWDC wrap-up for other announcements from yesterday’s event, including changes to iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, new Macs and more.

To be honest, I don’t think I’d use this feature very often either, but it eould be nice to have. Still, there are more useful features to enjoy

They released the iOS 16 BETA ? I thought it was delayed. At least as far as my usage goes, it's not really an issue. I don't remember when I had to rotate the phone to use FaceID.
