LG Optimus G gets KitKat in Korea, Knock Code in tow

13 May, 2014

The LG Optimus G might be getting a bit long in the tooth, but it's still a fine smartphone with an excellent 720p screen and a capable quad-core Krait CPU. And the good news is LG realizes that and is still working hard to extract every bit of potential out of it.

The company has started seeding the KitKat update to its former flagship. The update is currently only available in South Korea, but barring any unforeseen issues with it, it should start rolling out globally soon.

The update weighs 608 MB and is seeding over the air. Even though the ROM size will vary from region to region, it seems that downloading it over Wi-Fi is the way to go. The version code of the release is V30b and it's dated May 9, meaning it's fresh off LG's software development center.

The update brings support for the new ART runtime and improved performance thanks to Project Svelte, which are parts of the Android 4.4 KitKat release. LG has also implemented some of its home-baked goodies such as Knock code and double tap to unlock. The UI has also been refreshed with a transparent status bar and a new tabbed settings menu.

Previously we heard that the Optimus G will receive its KitKat update in the summer, so it appears that LG is ahead of schedule. We are just hoping the company doesn't waste any more time in seeding it to other markets.
