LG Q6 review

Orlin Milinov, 30 December 2017.

Display

The LG Q6 has a 5.5" IPS LCD touchscreen with 2,160x1,080 resolution, making for 442ppi density. It's protected by a sheet of Gorilla Glass 3, and like any LCD it has a standard RGB pixel pattern.

LG Q6 review

The maximum screen brightness, while not chart-topping, is still pretty impressive for a mid-ranger, reaching 510 nits. The Q6's contrast ratio is 1,771:1. With the latter it manages to fly past certain flagship devices even, such as Huawei's P10, but there are some better performers out there even in roughly the same price range in terms of brightness.

Oppo F5 0.192 422 2198

Vivo V7 0.295 470 1593
Sony Xperia XA1 0.512 537 1049

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) 0 348
Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) Max Auto 0 482
Nokia 6 (Global version) 0.364 484 1330
Xiaomi Mi A1 0.351 551 1570
Xiaomi Redmi 4 0.576 527 915

When it comes to color accuracy, the Q6 performs adequately with an average deltaE of 5 and maximum deviation of 8.4. Those certainly aren't flagship-level numbers, but for the price you're paying you are getting pretty accurate colors, with one exception: the whites are a bit bluish. This has been a growing trend in the mobile world recently, though, and it seems that most people may prefer whites that are bluer than they should be. The bluish whites make the whole UI look colder than it ought to be, but again a lot of people prefer this. The Q6 doesn't have any color calibration options, so you are stuck with this arrangement.

The minimum black level at 100% brightness is 0.288, which is respectable for an LCD panel (this value is always 0 for OLEDs because when showing black the pixels are shut off).

The sunlight legibility is definitely not among the best we've seen, but once again if you factor in the price point of the Q6 and its mid-range status, it's a good enough score, especially for an LCD. If you don't mind some washed out colors and loss of contrast the screen should remain readable when you're out and about in bright natural light.

Battery life

The Q6 ships with a 3,000 mAh battery, which is a good enough capacity for the screen size. Unfortunately though the phone doesn't support quick charging and the adapter brick in the box is only rated at 6W. This means you shouldn't expect a 15-minute mid-day top up to give it enough juice to last you until the evening, especially if you're a demanding user. In half an hour, the Q6 only gets from 0% to 25%.

The Q6 has been put through our standardized battery life testing procedure and came out on the other side with a 69h endurance rating. As you can see, its biggest weakness is video playback, which taxes the battery more than web browsing or making phone calls. While this isn't an earth-shattering score, the Q6 is in pretty good company in this regard - for example, the Huawei P9 Plus and Moto Z2 Force got the same result, while the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra, ZTE Axon 7, and Huawei Honor 8 all come close.

If you find yourself somehow not constantly making it through a day of use with the Q6 you can opt to let the built-in Battery saver do its thing - either at all times, or when the phone hits 15% or 5%. With this setting, brightness and vibration are reduced, and background apps may be restricted. There's also a dedicated Game battery saver, which adjusts video resolution and framerate in games. It can be customized to your needs on a game-by-game basis, and it even comes with a Break time feature that reduces brightness and performance when you take a break from playing.

LG Q6 Review

Our endurance rating denotes how long a single battery charge will last you if you use the LG Q6 for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. We've established this usage pattern so our battery results are comparable across devices in the most common day-to-day tasks. The battery testing procedure is described in detail in case you're interested in the nitty-gritties. You can also check out our complete battery test table, where you can see how all of the smartphones we've tested will compare under your own typical use.

Connectivity

The Q6 sports Qualcomm's Snapdragon 435 chipset, which comes with an integrated X9 modem, that LG has specced with maximum theoretical peak download/upload speeds of 300/100Mbps. Of course, in order to experience anything close to either of those numbers your network needs to support carrier aggregation in both directions, and you should be in an area with amazing signal, and connected to a cell site that's not overrun with users.

Wi-Fi on the Q6 is limited to 802.11b/g/n, and the 5GHz band is missing. That's a real shame considering that the Qualcomm SoC does support 802.11ac Wi-Fi, we assume this was merely a cost-cutting measure on LG's part. NFC is theoretically on board the Q6, but depending on where you live you may not get it. Thankfully for fans of the tech, an FM radio is available.

Bluetooth 4.2 is what's on offer, with LE support, while for positioning you get both GPS and GLONASS. Unfortunately the Q6 uses a microUSB port in a world that's slowly starting to adopt USB Type-C in more and more devices, even outside flagship ranges. At least there is the 3.5mm jack to save face as it allows you to connect any pair of headphones to the Q6, and its presence is something that needs to be celebrated these days, because a lot of handsets eschew it entirely.
