Major operators to lend LiMo a hand, new devices coming

21 May, 2010

According to Morgan Gillis, the Executive Director of LiMo foundation, three new carriers will be following Vodafone in releasing devices based on the LiMo platform by the end of the year.

So far, Vodafone is the only European operator to offer LiMo-based touch phones, the Samsung-made 360 M1 and 360 H1. As a matter of fact, there are around 60 other mobile phones based on the Linux Mobile platform, including a number of Motorola models (such as the RAZR2 V8, MOTOROKR E8, U9, etc.) but these two seem the only one with full touch interface. They've ben alos further customized with Vodafone's 360 UI.

Those two early birds are about to be followed by several other phones by the end of the year since three more operators "from the group of France Telecom, Telefonica, Verizon or SK Telecom" are expected to unveil devices powered by LiMo OS.

Morgan Gilles also shared his expectations on the current operating systems' future. According to him, only five of the operating systems out there will make it through the battle: LiMo along with Android, Windows, the revived Symbian and Apple's iPhone OS.

Strangely, but Samsung's refreshing Bada OS wasn't on that list and so weren't MeeGo, BlackBerry OS and HP's newest toy, the webOS. We'll let you be the judge on that.
