Mediatek to launch its own hexa-core chipset - MT6591

26 February, 2014

Beside working on two Cortex-A53-based chipsets and on the reportedly super-fast octa-core Mediatek MT6595, the company obviously has a hexa-core chipset in the pipeline, too. Yup, that's a six-core chipset, much like the just announced Samsung's Exynos 5260 Hexa.

The new chip is called the Mediatek MT6591 and it should already be in production, unlike the previous chipsets that we mentioned. The roadmap reveals that these would enter into production no earlier than the second half of the year.

The roadmap was leaked on the Chinese social network Weibo. It's unclear whether this hexa-core chipset will be using ARM's big.LITTLE architecture like the Samsung Exynos Hexa, but most likely it won't.

MediaTek already has octa core processors in their hands. Why copy Samsung? Hexa core isn't needed when octa core is there. Waiting for the Nvidia chipset.
