Dear All
I bought A780 in Shanghai, China recently. This phone has logo of China Mobile on it but is not locked. However, there are issues:
1. Browser as described by motorola is missing, rather monternet (some home page for China Mobile services, I guess) is displayed.
2. I cannot remove icons of China Mobile and monternet from home page of my cell when I modify the setting of home page from setup menu.
Can someone please tell me if this phone will work with other service providers as well. I mean, will I still be able to surf net by setting up new data connection profiles when using other service providers.
Thanks all for your responses

Mohammed,
I am not sure if the phone is discontinued. Keep in mind that while this phone is FCC approved, it has never been released in the US. The phone was released for the Chinese/European market. But thanks to GSM and Quadband technology the phone works anywhere in the world as long as you have GSM service. As you can see here there are plenty of dealers that still have the phone.

David,
I was using two of my friends sim cards (still waiting for fedex to deliver my wirefly order) and they both have Media.net 9.99. I ordered the 19.99 plan as well. I haven't tested MMS yet only SMS but I will try this weekend and let you know. Cingular is supposed to be pretty good in NYC so not sure what the deal is. Have you tried to go to a store close to you and see if they get Edge?

herm,
thnx 4 your response. i appreiate it.
i tried punching in the settings set forth by someone in an earlier message ..... it did make surving smoother on the www browser. though i like opera mini better, you can view the entire page without having to scroll left & right .... in any case, on both browsers, i still don't get the E, only G. but i live in the heart of manhattan, & i remember vaguely talking to a cingular tech support guy who confirms that i have edge technology in my area ..... the only thing i can think of is perhaps my media net plan. i have the $19.99 unlimited media net for internet, but not their $39.99 plan for pda devices. could that be the issue? what kind of media plan do you have?
another question: can you send mms (short message with picture or graphic)? for some reason i can only recieve them.
thnx again for your help,
david

David, I didn't have to do anything for the E to show. Once I pop a sim in came right on. when I moved in the house to a different spot it switched to E/G. At work the E was on all the time. I plugged the cingular settings as described here (see old posting with cingular settings) and I was browsing to Yahoo and my company web site. I have not measured the speed yet.

For the record, this phone is awesome. I had no problems and it design is unbelievable. Also, for the record, the phone can connect to the internet in Canada, at least through rogers. I just put in all the gprs and ip settings and I was on just like that!

Hey there everybody.
Got the phone for a month now. Overall, it's a great phone. Here are some good and bad.
Goods:
- 1.3MP camera ( very good quality )
- Loud and clear sound
- There's a feature that can make the phone read out loud your messages ( really good when you are driving )
- Speaking of PDA's, I think it's the smallest of all
- I love the fact that it can be used as a flash memory
- Phone can be used as a modem
Bads:
- Camera lens is not well protected
- Can't navigate on the internet in Canada ( I think north america )
- The keypads are a little small
- Time of response is a little slow
So other than that, it's an original phone. If you like flip-phones with pda features, you should definitly go for this one!

this phone can read sms, read the name of the contact and also can dial out the contact with our voice. We can answer a call with or without to open the flip. Camera also can be taken without to open the flip. I've tried to copy one mp4 file to play and it can work but I tried to copy another mp4 file, it cannot play. Don't know what's the problem, maybe there is a limit to play the mp4 file or the size of the mp4 file is to big. Can anybody assist me on this?

Hi Telly,
The Motorola A780 has been designed in such a way that you do not have to open the flip to make or receive calls. This is one such feature I like in this model. But, on the other hand, if you have a look at the other flip-based phones, you have to open the flip to make or receive calls.
The outer layout of the phone contains a dial pad, answer yes/no buttons, 4 way joystick and a home button. The dial pad and answer buttons are self-explanatory. The joy stick can be used to send messages, launch media player, select contacts and view the calls history. The messages can also be typed by opening the flip and using the internal keypad or handwriting option.
Ofcourse, reg. your last query, each contact has many fields and also including the Notes wherein you can type in your personal note for the contact.
Hope, this helps.
Manoj.
